Evening all,

Well in an attempt to lower my credit card, I've just sold my Mac Pro and 30" cinema display...

So, I'm looking at purchasing a MacBook Pro.

Specs are the standard 17" model + 2.93GHz proc upgrade. I will probably replace the HDD myself down the line with a faster SSD or a larger and faster standard drive.

Question I have is, do any of you have the glossy screen and does this affect the colour accuracy of the LED display at all?

I'd rather get the glossy screen as I like the idea of the glass face on the screen and it looks cleaner design wise to me - not to meantion I'll save £40 quid.

Thanks in advance.

Anti glare for me any day. i was forever dodging reflections on the glossy screen

I know what you mean about reflections, but I'm currently using an Advent laptop whilst I'm computerless and I can't see any reflections on it when using it.

I'm more concered about colour accuracy, although I don't think the glass will affect it any?

I've a 15" MBP with a glossy screen. Don't find it a problem, but then I had a Compaq for 2 years also with a glossy screen.

No problem with calibration, on the gloss screen. My MBP is 13 months old, and the only problem I have with calibration is a slight warmness of tone compared to the "big screen" iMac and the 24"monitor I used to use. I suspect this is due the the video card , not being able to drive the blue channel hard enough to get a linear response. Not a big problem though.

The Gloss screen doesn't really bother me either. I don't edit photos in brightly lit rooms, so I'm usually fine.

I've got a spyder3 and have no problems calibrating either.
Although I've had to turn the contrast up on the screen by a very small amount to match the prints better.

[edit, this is using 15" MPB (late 08 unibody)

My iMac has a glossy screen and i actually find it better for photos than a matte one. Everything looks great and calibrating with a Colormunki is no problem at all. I find the colours to be a lot better than my old matte one actually.

If it was me then i would definiatley get the glossy screen

Thanks Jonh, Daniel and Zak for your response, exactly what I wanted to hear regarding the calibration of these screens...

Just ordered the MBP so hopefully I'll have it some time next week - woohoo. :D

I have the 17" Macbook pro with 1920x1200 matte screen. It is superb and I can give a direct comparison because we have 3 gloss versions in the house. My personal preference is for the matte screen but there is not a lot in in. The gloss wins in certain situations and my advice would be that this is a large purchase and you really do not want to make a mistake with it. I really think that the only way to get the one that is best for you is to book a session at your local Apple store and in the special instructions bit say that you are booking it to be shown the difference. They will then have both laptops for you to try. Take a CD or memory card with some images on and make the decision for yourself.

EDIT - woops just noticed that you have ordered it :) Oh well still worth doing as you have 14 days to swap it if it is not what you want!

Thanks for the extra information Darren. :)

I was more concered about the calibration of these panels but since it can be done without any problems I'm more than happy to go with the glossy finish.

I prefer the seamless look of the display with the glass to the metal benzel around the matte version.

Although, as you said if I don't like it I can always return it for the matte screen...

You know its funny...

When I bought my Mac Pro in mid-January last year, the new version came out just weeks later.

Now, I've ordered a new MacBook Pro it looks like history is repeating itself.

Thing is though, as per usual we don't know when this model is being released and there is usually a bit of a delay even when they are first made available.

It happened to me with the Mac Pro and the Macbook pro so I know what you mean !!

Hahaha, gotta love Apples' secrecy huh?! :D

Thing is you have to release beta equipment and software to developers or you end up with complaints about lack of drivers, software incompatibilities etc. Someone is going to get a good kicking for that !!

Matte here too fwiw. Calibrates fine :).

Oh forgot to update this thread!

Anyways, received the MBP last Friday and OMG it is perfect. The screen is beautiful although its 13" smaller than what I was using. :D

I've barely even noticed its glossy when its fired up and will hardly ever use it outdoors anyway.

4Gb of RAM is really dire though, most times I'm down to <100Mb free although 300 quid for 8Gb isn't justifiable at the moment.

Magic mouse is great too. I also just got myself Aperture 3 last night which I am liking a lot. :D

I wouldn't normally but there are a few occasions where the upgrade price is actually cheaper than the price of the RAM from Crucial on top of the price of the lower amount from Apple. I was looking at upgrading my mac pro from 6Gb (4x512+4x1024) to 12Gb(4x1024+4x2048) but the price of RAM has gone back up again and after running activity monitor I found that I am tending to use 5-5.5Gb !! most of the time. Remember also that RAM is generic and as long as you have the correct timings you SHOULD be able to use generic RAM from other places like SCAN. What I tend to do is take the machine to SCAN and fit the RAM in the car park. If it does not work I can take it straight back into the shop :)

Are you upgrading a 4Gb (2x2Gb) machine to 8Gb (2x4Gb)?? If so is that not nearer £500-600

Ouch 588 for the value sticks!

Crucial do it for 300 and the upgrade was 491 from apple. Can't really afford either.

Just had a look and, yes, £360. Scan must have not updated their prices !!

glossy vs matt screen, gloss will show every finger print and mark, matt will be more forgiving, you can get a display without any glass on it at all,but will scratch very at a glance. Please also be aware new 27" imac has a known issue of yellowing to brown blemishes on display which there is no fix, they stopped manufacture of these units but lg who make screens have not fixed problem,so if you have display replaced you may well have more of a problem, plus a few dead pixels thrown in,as apple will not replace a display with less than 10 dead pixels in a size of 10p coin in one place you run risk of getting a worse display.Sit tigh and await fix but get applecare protection plan as a display will set you back at least £500.and that goes for all apples weather imac macbook pro ect.So please please get warranty.;=D

I've got the glossy screen and don't really find reflections a problem, and I'm using mine regularly on the train by a window. Screen's so bright I don't find it an issue.
