Need a new laptop because mine is dying a slow and painful death! So thought why not get a shiny and oh so pretty mac. Was thinking the basic macbook pro but what about the mac air? help me spend my pennies please.

are mac book resolutions/screens ok for photo editing? i know pro is I just not sure on plain macbook, ta!

MacBook pro is fantastic for media work, it'll be fast enough to run Aperture at a good speed and the screen is lovely. The Air is designed to be portable so won't be as fast, you're also limited on storage space - and there's no dvd drive and limited ports. Plus it's a lot more expensive, so if you want a laptop go for the Pro.

I have the Macbook Air, it's great but a little slow (compared with the pros). It runs PS elements just fine but it's quite hard getting the colours right, always looks over exposed. The air is really designed to be your desktop away from home, rather than a stand alone computer.

The air is cheaper than the Macbook pro and great if you do the majority of your work on a desktop but otherwise go for a pro.

either middle macbook or macbook pro. Am unconvinced by the air (although its v.sexy)

Go to Cambridge Apple Store and have a good play. Norwich PCWorld is not much use _ sales monkey didn't know what Aperture was for...

The Air wasn't designed for this sort of thing, it's basically an ultra-portable notepad. Go for the Pro, it won't let you down, much.

I got the mac book as on testing them I didn't feel the resolution etc was worth the extra £400 when I already have a 24" HD monitor that I can plug into for heavy work at home.

Good choice. I have the 24" iMac as my main computer and bought a white 2.4 Macbook for £699 from the Apple Refurb site. Maxed it out to 4gig ram from Crucial and it flies using Capture NX. The screen is perfectly ok for location work. Both run XP via Bootcamp. Much better value than any other Mac laptop at the moment.

If you want to use the laptop for image editing don't waste your money on the air - the basic macbook pro with 4Gb Ram would be a more useful machine.

Initially I considered the air but then went straight to the pro

ive got a macbook pro and i run DPP. eos utility, aperture 2 all at the same time with hardly any slow down and thats shooting tethered up to around 400 to 500 images.

as Tony the Tiger would say Their Grrrrreeeeaaaattttt

I think you went for the best option there! I don't think the air would be much good as a main computer, while the Macbook pro has the bigger screen and more power it is a more money and not as portable as the normal Macbook, the creen issue is easily sorted out with an external monitor (so even better than the Macbook pro) for when you're at home.

I just wish they would bring out a 13.3" Macbook pro!

I have the basic macbook and it runs photoshop CS2 quite happily although I can't comment on other photography software.
I think it's a great choice, portable (mine has frequently gone on holiday with me!) and when plugged into an external screen copes perfectly well as a home computer.

I got the Macbook Pro as I did not want the glossy screen of the macbook. If you don't mind the glossy screen, then the macbook (at the Apple refurb store price of just under £600) is very hard to beat. Also with the macbook (or macbook pro) you get a firewire port, which means you can do your editing off an external drive for faster speeds then the internal drives.

Couldn't justify the cost of the Air for the limited spec and went for the Macbook Black. Loving it right now and amazing for editing shots :)

MacBook Pro is the way to go!!! The MacBook has an integrated 64mg video card where as the Pro has a video card with 256mg on it. I use it with a second monitor. I moved from a windows PC and it just works............says it all really

Macbook has the Intel X3100 with 144Mb of shared v.ram.

Pros have GeForce graphics card with 256Mb or 512Mb depending on spec. Better for 3D imaging although how much processing in photoshop / aperture is offloaded to the GPU?

Exactly I just couldn't justify the additional cost for that single gain.

For your requirements :agree: you made the right choice but horses for courses I have the 'Air' and would not swap it for anything right now ... ... it is more than just plain damn sexy it is seriously functional as an add on to a desk top (iMac 24") set up when used as a notebook away from base ... ... or on holiday in Scotland as I am right now ... :D

Hope you enjoy your new Pro and it serves you well ... ;)

:p

As sole mac, don't get the air - not enough ports. apart from that the pro's are better but, depending on what you're going to do, a macbook may do. don't forget an external HD as time machine will back up to it.

max the ram - don't buy apple stuff it's hideously expensive, go via crucial or the like.

After a while you'll end up with an imac, then you can get an air (or whatever succeeds it) like the green-boy above ;)

Pro photographer this month has a little bit on the Air and the main concern was the fact once you plug a mouse in you have no more USB ports available....still it looks good! ;)
