Need to buy a new laptop as my old one just died. My question is, is there a decent alternative to a macbook pro? I am thinking about getting the 17" MBP, but obviously it is a very expensive option. Are there any PCs with decent enough screens that are any cheaper? Cheers, Will.

Dell XPS with upgraded screen? Not very cheap though (but cheaper than MBP)

Don't buy an HP. Friend's one has just died at aged a little over a year. It's been utter rubbish the entire time she's had it.

MBP is expensive and I'm amazed to note that apple care on one is now £200!!! See what comes up in the refurb store.

There's someone on here selling an MBP for £500 or so. Can't remember whether is the 17 though. 2009 model I think.

If you can hang on for a few months Apple will probably have a a new model range available. You can often pick up the older models at a discount. Or alternatively get the new model, looks like there may be a quad core option ( If you believe all the rumors :) )

Do you really need the 17", I find my 15" perfectly adequate. Also have a look at the Mac refurb store, some bargains to be had there.

Oh, so one bad PC makes the entire product line rubbish does it?

HP's attitude is why I wouldn't recommend them. They are washing their hands of it. That's why I wouldn't buy one. If they'd turned around and offered a free repair as the laptop has been unreliable from day one I'd still recommend them. They aren't. They're wanting £500 to repair a £1400 laptop that has been repaired once within 2 months of ownership and has gone wrong again just over a year later with the same fault!
