Yes
It's got one of these the other day and want to upgrade the ram

1: Can I do it myself or do I have to go to apple?

According to some places I can have A max of 16gb but apples site says 8gb

I used Crucial scanner and it says max of 16gb

1: Which is true? 16gb or 8gb?
2: Where's the best place to buy ram from?

Louise,

Your MBP will take up to 8Gb RAM.

You can do it yourself and Google is your friend for How to's...

I recommend Crucial, I've been using them for years.
Good value and fast shipping.

Hope this helps

It's usually quite easy to upgrade RAM in macs. My macbook just needed the battery removing and a cover unscrewing. Then the RAM slots are visible so you can pop out the old ones and pop in the new sticks.

I've also had memory from crucial. It's a good price and works well.

If i instealled the 8gb myself would it void my warrenty

also how much of a difference would there be going from 4gb to 8gb

Replacing the ram will not void the warranty, but obviously apple wouldnt cover the ram if that was to go faulty... You can actually put 16gb into a MBP but think you have to get a specific set, there is lots on the Internet about this, but the 16gb upgrade is very expensive compared to the 8gb.

is it safe or is it best to stick to the recommended 8gb?

Unless you need it get the 8gb. Ebuyer tends to be cheapest, for 27 quid to get mine last month for my mbp
