Looking for a new laptop - main use is photos and internet -
Would I be better off with a mac? or should I stick with what I know??

Are there any significent dissadvantages in getting a Mac over my current laptop (dell 3gig P4 inspiron)?

Are they sooo much better than laptops for imaging? if so how much???

TIA
Andy

I prefer Macs (got 3 now!).

If you're prepared to buy the software you need (Photoshop or alternative), Office (student version?). Then you'll be okay.

You don't need (at the mo) AV or Firewall software.

You really need 1 or 2Gb (buy memory from Crucial not Apple).

I got the 13" cos it's small and more portable, the battery lasts a few hours.

The screen I prefer cos I think it's better quality.

They run ok speed wise.

Downside is that games don't seem as good on the Mac (even on my iMac - Americas Army).

HTH,
Carl.

Mac :)

I have both, but rarely use my windows based machine, my mac does everything that the windows machine does :)

buy kingston not crucial memory... kingston do mac specific memory and don't alter the price on identical memory for different computers (like crucial do!)

Thanks for that tip! I'm buying some ram for my macbook pro in the next week or so!

try it, I thought crucial were the ones to go for too but then learnt they bump up the price depending on what make you're running!!

i used to have pc for years, then i used a pc and a mac, now i hardly ever use my PC and when i do it p***es me off so much that i want to throw it out of the window.

saying that, i have a number of windows laptops and pcs for sale if you are interested :)

I much prefer the user interface of Macs over PC's. I have just borrowed a friends Mac Book to tke to Scotland with me for a week and he has XP and OSX installed as its an Intel machine. Seems to do quite a nice job as a dual boot machine from my experiences with it so far.

Just changed from PC to mac. Much more user friendly, but bit of a learning curve. Macs are, bit for bit, more expensive, but when the new O/S comes out in the autumn i don't think there will be any competition.

I have 2 macs and just recently sold my PC.

Got a PowerMac Dual G5 and a 17" Macbook Pro, the MBP has been invaluable for me when out and about.

I love using Aperture also!

Macbooks are excellent and i urge everyone on a windows based laptop to get one.

15.4" Macbook Pro here - and I love it!

Next time I change my desktop computer - it'll be a Mac.

Thanks for all the views,
In the end I have upgraded the memory on my dell, put Vista on and blew the upgrade cash on a 42" HD TV :)

just looking at ways to hook up my PC from upstairs to the TV.. :)

I'm personally thinking of trading in the PC notebook and move to a macbook. The build quality of the macbook is just so much better, the specs are better, integration seems to be great, only problem is the price.

find a student or teacher to buy it for for you on their school/uni network and you'll get 15% off :D

or theres apple refurb that are essentially the same price as the education ones...I know, I've checked through work ;)

another mac user.

"12 iBook G4 - and i still love it, even if it is gettting close to total destruction :p

go to shops and try them both, people rave about apples UI, but i didnt like it at all, maybe because im used to windows i dunno, but its the bit you use all the time and as such YOU should make sure YOU like using it before spending YOUR money

I can't get on with Macs - had G3's at a previous posting and hated them so much I used my own laptop on Ops (something that's a Big No-No in the military).
That said I can't get on with Canons either. It'll come down to whatever you're comfortable using rather than one machine actually being better than the other.
