Yes
The liscence for macafee is due up this week. I've heard Kaspersky (?SP?) is a better alternative. What do others use? Anyone use the Yoggie standa lone Dongle?

Hi

Have you had a look into using Microsoft Security essentials and Windows Firewall which would be a zero cost option.

Andy

Or Bitdefender, £19.99 for a years license but for 3 machines.

I went with the latest Mcafee but to say it's paranoid is an understatement and twice the price bitdefender so I uninstalled the trial version and went bitdefender.

I now have it on the laptop, my main machine and a spare license.

Kaspersky is protecting all my customers, its the 2nd best thing I have ever used on their systems, the first is no longer available. Ohh and its on my PC's and server here at home.

I'll give my vote for Avast too. Sits silently on my computer, doesn't slow anything down and so far so good in terms of virus protection and spam filtering.

I got rid of avast, avira, malwarebytes, adaware and just use MSE.

I use MSE now, but have in the past used AVAST and AVG.
so in order:
1) MSE
2) Avast
3) AVG
4) Any paid for option.

I run Kaspersky on 10 PC's at work and can't fault it tbh. I used to get nothing but grief when running Norton. Whatever you decide to change to, don't forget to completely remove your existing AV software!! Horrible things happen if you try and run two different packages on the same PC :gag:

Avast here!

Eset NOD32 gets my vote, consistently scores 100% in the monthly VB100 independent antivirus tests. Kaspersky is another good one.

For free ones I'd go for either Avast or Avira, I never got along with AVG.
Incidentally MSE failed the VB100 tests this month.

I found McAfee near useless for protection against malcrafted web pages etc when running with Vista and Windows 7,

I tried a few options and then settled on the paid version of AVG - IMO McAfee (corporate) still havn't got it right.

used
Norton - dumped when license due
AVG - became too bloated
now use M-SE
and wireless router

and purchased lifetime sub to SuperAntiSpyware Pro = US$19

+1 I've got it running on about 8 machines at home, very light on memory usage and only bugs you when you actually have a threat, I've never had it flag up false positives either.

I used to use AVG free for years and had no probs at all.

But thn with AVG 9 i found that getting onto many sites (including this one) took ages or not at all.

In the end changed to MSE and have had no probs at all - and I can now get on sites fast!

Another vote for Kaspersky, have removed Macafee (it did seem to slow my pc using macafee)

we user mcaffe vs at work on about 150 pc , if you got a quick pc its fine , if not stay away the footprint is huge, i have had similar experiences with kaspersky

i use avast at home which seems to have a really small footprint

please dont use zonealarm, it does nothin that windows firewall and your router cannot. apart from bog your resources out..
Hi Neil, I've always been averse to allowing too many MS applications to run on my system. Just how good is their firewall these days, I vaguely remember installing Zonealarm rather than Microsoft Firewall for some reason regarding MS but can't remember why now - and we're talking years here. Cheers

another vote for kaspersky here, used to run nod32 which was excellent but more expensive come renewal, so far kasperky seems to be equally as good

Thanks for all the replies peeps. I was surprised by a few of the suggetions!

We're runnig Vista at home. I've gone off Macaffee as the definition download seems to hog the system for the first 30 minutes or so on each power up. Also some of the automated scans....don't . I' have to kick them off manually when the computer says they haven't been done for a while

I've asked this question of two other large forums I use..... I was surprised to see MSE get such a high approval! My favourate reply was the chap who suugested usign a fire axe to chop the cables when it all goes wrong.

It's all subjective I know but the opinion across the sites was:

1. Microsoft Security essentials x 13
2. Avast x10
3. Kaspersky x10
4. AVG x7
5. Eset NOD32 x6
6. Avira x4
7. Bitdefenderx2
8. Macaffeeeee
9. Bullguard
10. norton 360
11. A fire Axe....to chop the wire

AVG + Maalwarebytes here, you can get 3 licences for about a fiver from zavvi and thehut (same company i believe)

Another vote for Kaspersky Internet security

Not sure what the new Kaspersky Pure is though  looking into it

And picking up on what Grendel said - you must remove completely old AV - if you go on Kaspersky user form there are links for the software to remove it completely, inc from the registry.

ESET Smart Security. Used it for a year or so with no problems at all. Used Nod32 antivirus before they launched the antivirus and firewall package. Very light and you'll just download and forget about it.

At home is use Kaspersky as I get 3 free licenses from Barclays online banking. At work I have NOD32 on over a 1000 systems. Both are excellent products but I prefer NOD32 overall. To family and friends looking for advice on free products, I currently like MSE.

Ok... a little update. I've been using AVG for yonks without hassle. After reading this thread and the support for avast I said, let's give it a bash! I'm not one to turn my nose up at something without giving it a trial run. Firstly, I use windows vista, so I download it, and 3 days later my PC won't boot up without crashing after 20/30 seconds . Just after uninstalling, reverting back to AVG, and all is hunky dory again.

Must be something wierd with avast and a particular vista version/security update, but my PC sure as hell didn't like it! Just a heads up to anyone who comes across this too and is a vista user

I take that back about avast... seems something much worse is up so was coincidence...

Kasperski here. free for being a barclays customer but i'd have bought it if not. 3 licences all used. Netbook has MS essentials on it.

Used to use AVG free a lot but it is not what it once was. Last machine I sorted out with a virus problem for someone was running AVG free. I gave it back with MS essetials on it.
