Mac wont shut down..

I would agree with Paulmack - your computer should be flying with 12GB of RAM and it's a MacPro... I have a 2-year old iMac with 4Gb and I'm still impressed with its speed.

After you get your OS re-installed, just make sure you keep doing a repair permissions run every week or so and your mac will be fine. Even better, use a utility program like Onyx once a week to clear out your caches and fix permissions. You may want to use a defrag program as well (though a lot of mac gurus say it isn't necessary).
 
I would also agree with the re-install the OS option.

We run a few Macs at work and one of them had exactly the same problem you're getting. The b****r would never shut down properly. We tried everything imaginable and nothing would ever make a difference. It didn't really cause us too much grief but it was a PITA.

Anyway, a few weeks ago I upgraded this particular Mac from OS 10.4 to OS 10.5 (Tiger to Leopard). Since doing so the shut down problem has never, even once, occurred again. I'm convinced it was the update of the OS that solved the problem.

So far iv unplugger ALL devices connected to this machine, iv even tried removing all HHD except the Mac drive with the os,, iv looked through the running processes and close any that i could identify as being safe to do so, iv tried logging out as me and then closing, booting up in SAFE mode ect..

To make things a little simpler due to your limited knowledge on Macs, would it not be easier for you to do a full restore of the operating system? Have you got all of your files off the machine on a backup drive and have you got all the software you would need to reinstall everything you use?

If the answer is yes then the best move now would be to do a full reinstall of the system. You say that even programmes are slow to open and close yet you have 12 GB of RAM so something isnt quite right and it can be either a hardware or software issue and the easiest one to test right now would be the software so flatten it and start again.

Do you have the OS disk you need to reinstall? If not give me a shout and I will run you off a copy of mine if you like. Then all you do is put the CD in the drive, reboot but this time keep hold of the 'C' key on your keyboard until the apple logo appears then you should be able to do a fresh install.

Hope this helps but if this isnt the route you want to go down then once again let me know and I will ask a mate of mine tomorrow as he is an Apple Certified engineer so he might be able to offer some more advice.

Can i try to fix permissions now? that may sort it without a re-install..?

This one has Vertion 10.5.6 as far as im aware its the latest one?

My Google searches on this issue only pulls up pretty old threads about it.. so its supposed to be a sorted issue now!!


Anyway, Thanks very much for the help guys.. i will try and dig out my Disc and try to save all my bits n bobs, not too sure how to save my mail ect though! i'll get on it..

I would not have thought that the permissions on this one would sort out your issue as it would appear that something isnt quite right here with the OS

Yes this is the latest version. I think I have 10.5.6 on DVD, or if its not it just before it so would still do you just fine. So if you need a copy let me know.

Just one other quick query, how old is it? Depending on the warranty then Apple have very good telephone support, their guys know their stuff so may be worth giving them a call. You can check the warranty HERE
 
Don't have my mac to hand but you want to use activity monitor (or is it system profiler?) to see what is running and force quit anything that appears to be hogging up the system.

If you have no joy I'd take it to your nearest apple store and get them to take a look.

I know it's a pain but they will solve the problem.

My local store currently have my MacBook and have replaced a faulty HDD for free, even though the machine is three years old an well outside it's warranty.
 
The repair permissions is in disk utility, it might be worth a try...
 
oh, one thing I don't think has been mentioned - is yours the only account on the Mac? If you have more than one account and use fast user switching to switch between them sometimes that can cause problems. You'll usually get and error message when shutting down though letting you know that other users are still logged on.
 
you could also give onyx a go at repairing things as well.
 
ITS FIXED!!!!!!!!

Woohoo!!

OK, so, its running Bootcamp, while in the pc partition it crashed.. this is a while ago now. anyway, i re-booted the 'PC' but it wanted to do a scan of the drives.. anyway, it seemed to hang, so i shut it down and booted into Mac.. that went fine until i tried to shut down again, now, in the past the same thing has happened and its cured the pc from wanting the disc check.. but this time it didn't..

Anyway, iv concentrated on getting the pc to do its checks and boot into pc to finalise all the checks. and that has fixed my problem! it now shuts down..
