mac tiff won't open on windows machine

As the title suggests I tried to open a tiff saved on my mac on my xp laptop but photoshop didn't like it. It was saved as an IBM file. I can transfer psd files so it's not a major issue, just curious as to why it might be....:shrug:

when you saved it on the Mac was the file extension .tiff , I have had a few cases of this, if you change the file extension to .tif when on the PC it may work, thats all i had to do. I dont know why.
