im after an easy to understand comparison website

I have a mbp 2012 i5 and wish to upgrade to an i7 Mac.

I wish to see how much faster the various i7 incarnations are over what I have now.

No it won't be unless you're trying to play old games or perhaps a few too many 4K streams. The new Mac Mini's are dual core similar to your 2012 I5, so you're only going to receive some architectural improvements from them making minor updates yearly, + some clock speed increases.

Thanks Rich I don't play games but am looking for an editing machine, Mac mini not the way to go?

Not in the way they used to be, prev gen 2012 was a quad core i7, but with the 2015 revision they've cut the specs of the i7 to a dual core, so the 3.0GHz benchmarks a good 20% slower than the previous 2.6 i7. Suddenly sold a glut of the old model 2012 i7 in the weeks after the new model came out.

It also depends on what apps you are using. Some apps such as FCPX leverage the GPU so that would have an impact on the speed .

The basic Mac mini comes with a spinning disk instead of an SSD and the memory is soldered to the logic board, so cannot be upgraded. I would go for a 13" retina Macbook Pro (with 16GB RAM) and an external display (non Apple).

Thanks. In the end I went for a used gaming desktop PC, many, many times faster than the Mac, I'm not even sure apple make a comparable, at least not for the price I paid!
