Some smaller life savers...

Launcher http://www.alfredapp.com/

Web based but a free (and better imho) alternative to 1Password https://lastpass.com/

F.lux fixes this: it makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day.http://stereopsis.com/flux/

TextExpander saves you countless keystrokes with customized abbreviations for your frequently-used text strings and images. http://smilesoftware.com/TextExpander/

Window management http://www.mizage.com/divvy/

Have a look at this offer mate..!

https://www.mupromo.com/

Lots of the stuff suggested and more. Great bundle for £31 i even paid for it and that is saying something... :-)

That is a great great price for a well stacked bundle! I've already got a couple of the applications, but if I thought I'd have use for the other ones I'd be all over that! Although it's probably worth it just to get Parallels!

For anyone who doesn't take that offer up before it expires and maybe wants 1Password, which is a great piece of software, here's a 20% discount code to put in at the checkout stage.

iSlayer - 20% off 1Password (Valid until 31/12/2015)
Found it on here through google. http://chris.pirillo.com/1password-coupons/

I first got it for my iPhone about 18months ago and it seemed really pointless. Then, when I delved into the desktop version, it really came into its own. I've currently got mine synced between 2 Macs, an iPhone and iPad.

Couldn't live or work without:
Aperture 3
Nik plugins for Aperture 3
Pages

Jbidwatcher

Give Time Machine a try. It should be there already and does the job. You'll need an external drive though.

I don't use time machine myself but you can use it on a partition. On the kids macbooks I set them up with a 60gb partition plus a 20gb partition then set time machine to backup user files to the 20gb partition.

Partitions are just as good/bad as copying to a shadow direectory. I've never lost a partition on a disk... it's always been data loss on the platter surface that has hapened to me.

You can afford a mac ;) so just buy an external disk. Can't be more than £50...

The kids have a macbook each as does Mrs_C but none of them would use an external disc. We have a proliant server and they still don't use that !

MS Office 2011
Omni Focus/Plan/Graffle (Task/Project/Visio)
Mindjet MindManager
iCompta
VLC
Parallels
Adobe CS5
Aperture
Firefox (although use Safari as my default browser)
VNC Viewer
Cyberduck (FTP)
1Password
MacDive
Skype
Transmission
Calibre

in the dock! Time Machine backup to external drive.

MacOS is linux ffs. Set up a cron job to back up using rsync when the macbooks are on. That's what I've done here - all PCs backed up every 15 mins. Noone knows it's there apart from me but I (think I) have 100% important data backup...

here is my list of must have mac apps imo -

little snitch - very handy to stop software munching bandwidth
transmit - nice ftp program
xmarks - syncs bookmarks between firefox, safari, iphone etc
trillian - all in one messenger app for msn, yahoo, aim, googletalk, icq etc
office 2011 - its actually pretty good and i prefer outlook to mac mail
parallels - great bit of software for running virtual machines of other operating systems from your mac desktop
disco - disc burning app that works well (prefer it to toast)
textmate - mega notepad app, handy if doing code as well
coda - mega coding app
imtoo video converter - nice little/quick app for converting movie files
path finder - file manager app, better than finder imo
flip - as above
