how are you using your internet connection? through airport or ethernet?

What browser are you using that gives this problem?

i've never had a problem with the connection on the mac - it's my internet provider that is the problem :D

I had exactly the same problem when using wireless- found the solution was to reduce the 'mtu' setting to match my ISP (which was TalkTalk) not sure what version of the OS you are using, but I had to do some system updates to get the ability to change the MTU on the wireless card.

Hi

Guys

just tried to make a paypal payment on mac . i`m using aiport and netgear with AOL . on 0sx install disc it says
mac os v 10.5.5
as for anything else i`m lost so english please .

Have Mac Book Pro (Probably similar to yours) Conected wirelesly via Linksys router and BT internet. Runs fine.

Try downloading Opera browser. This is supposed to be the fastest one available at the moment.( MacUser gave it 4 Mice, Firefox only got 3.). See if it makes any difference.

How is you email connection. Is that coming through OK?

You could go to the network dialogue box in system preferences and see if running the assistant or diagnostic option from the "Assist me" tab...it's at the bottom.

Failing that ring the nearest Apple store to see if they can help , or make an appointment to take it in

Latest OS is 10.5.6

That'll come through as an automatic update.

Try contacting AOL help to see if they can sort things out for you

Hi Rog

This sounds all very wrong... no computer (Mac or PC) should be slow on the internet now if you have a broadband connection.

I am not qualified to offer help or advice really, but what I suggest you do is to register on a Mac support forums and ask for advice on there. I am certain you will get all the help you need. It sounds like you might have a faulty Mac.

Have you tried connecting to the internet via Ethernet... if so, is this faster...?

Here's a super Mac Support forum - http://forums.macosxhints.com/index.php

Please let us know how you get on, thanks.

cheers guys

all working ok at the moment . i dare say it will take some getting used to .

next i need to see what software will work and what won't .

Hi Rog

So is the internet speed once again fast...? Has this been sorted...? What did you do to fix it...?

Hi

Guys

don't have a clue why but the net is now working as it should

as for software

i have cs2/3 .. lightroom . for my acer .. i have Aperture for My Mac

do they work on Mac or is it a case of getting them for this machine ..

i can always put Parallels on it and use Mac along side windows .

getting used to things in different places + some different software ..

Rog:thumbs:

They will both work perfectly on a Mac. Also, I am sure there's a way to transfer the license too from PC to OSx if you have the software. You may have to contact Adobe, but it can be done.

you need versions of cs2/3 and light for the osx operating system obviously if you have windows versions.

You can transfer the license across, but it is one or the other...

Hi Rog,

I wouldn't think it would be your Mac hardware at fault causing the slow internet problems you explained before. I've not had any Mac related internet slowdowns-more in my case to do with my ISP(Now Be broadband) at fault due to having huge server and network dropouts not to mention the quality of my line and the distance to my local exchange causing most of the problems.

Certain internet browsers can clash with certain websites, sometimes if you load one website using Firefox and then the same again using Safari you get a noticable difference on loading speed, like others have said maybe try using a different internet browser if the problem persists?

Michael.

cheers

Guys

giving firefox a try .. still very slow in the morning .. and we are only about 600 yards from our exchange .. could be the lines though .

another question is how do i remove software . i know one option but is there a place i can goto like windows add/remove prog's .

god you can tell i'm new to Mac can't you .

Rog

I just drag them to the trash...

I prefer to have control over those, as sometimes it is good to keep preferences for if you reinstall something. It is easy enough to find the folders in spotlight.

For the OP there is a good guide here.

You should never need to modify the MTU size on the client. The router will "segment" the packets for you.

cheers

for all the help guys

not to sure i understand some of it though ..

spent most of the day with slow internet again though ..

anyone live near chester / Buckley :D .. i could do with a walk round the mac .. :shake:

net just getting better now ..

Rog

ok

i'm sat here with it conected to the internet via Ethernet ..
it isn't fast / it is super fast ..

any ideas what to do .. english please guys , i have used windows for 25 years .

theMusicMan , i have also asked on the forum you gave a link to . waiting for an answer cheers

Rog

Read my previous post - you are EXACTLY describing the problem I had - prefect speed when wired, rubbish when wireless.

I have worked in IT for 15 years and have needed to change the MTU many times when working with wireless access points. If you NEVER need to change the setting why did Apple decide to add the functionality to a recent update of OSX ?

Rog - PM if I can help you :-)

Hi Rog - you ought to try out what Andy suggests, it sounds as though this might work.

cheers

for all the help guys ..

Andy ,
i did try your help the other day , and it made no differance , however
i think this was because i had missed something .

just tried it again now and it is not fast / not very fast / it is warp speed :woot:

fingers crossed it stay like this ..

god it is good to go on my own web site and be able to look at my photo's one after another without being able to make a cup of tea in between .

also many thanks for your personal offer of help .

about to start a new thread .. this on is windows based ..

how do you guys know all this

Rog

Weird. Totally weird...!

In the studio we have Mac Pro (Wired and Wifi), iMac 20" (Wired) and a Mac Book (Wifi). All three appear to run at the same speed (on Speedtest).

I've just checked the router, the MTU is 1500 for the dialer and checked my AP too. The Dot11 radio interface is 1500 too. (NB - this is a full controllable Cisco network here).

I'm not sure what routers you guys are using - I guess it's possible your ISP is setting one MTU on the WAN (perhaps 1492 bytes) and your router is giving the Access Point 1500?

This being the case, then when your packets from your machine hit the router they're going to be fragmented. I can only assume (i've not delved massively into wireless to be honest) that the overheads with wireless and reassembly of the fragmented packets on the return path are what cause the delay.

I wonder why the Mac seems to suffer from this more than Windows though?

yeh it is weird - I've seen this a few times on Windows boxes too. Seems to be down to the ISP and making sure you dont send them packets bigger than they are expecting....Would be nice if they standarised !! Im with talktalk and run at 1440.

ok guys

after the last 2 post's i'm of to learn Russian

don't have a clue what you are talking about .

cheers для всей помощи

there that was easy

Have you sorted this now?

My Grandad's macbook arrived today and to my surprise it was hellish slow on the net.
We plugged in the ethernet and it got about 8 times faster (download times).
I messed about with some stuff, and managed to get it faster wireless than with the ethernet, turned out that setting the wifi mode to b only rather than g or b+g mixed did the trick.

Now I just need to work out his wireless security. If anybody knows how to setup security on the tiscali/siemens router please say. It doesn't matter what I try I can't get the damn thing to work with security turned on.
It's not a mac thing either, we had the same problem when I tried to use my old Toshiba laptop there, but now he's got a portable computer I need to sort it for him.
