Mac OS Leopard... anyone upgraded yet...?

Dont forget to leave this bit out,...

"However, in practice they just don't seem to become real-world problems," he added. "The old wisdom still stands: if you want to avoid viruses and worms, get a Mac."

Just upgraded and new features are extremely handy. The "To Do" section in Mail is a godsend! Wow. So simple but so effective. As I deal on e-mail 80% of the time following up quotes and business using this system will be so effective. The "Stacks" feature is extremely handy for accessing frequently used folders etc,... Pretty sure there a plenty more features to browse through but for now I am very happy. The overall system response is a lot quicker than previous one too.

Not too sure what your point is there mho...? I appreciate that there may be a loophole there somewhere, but we all know that Mac's are way superior in terms of security and virus's, so why make this post?

Yes, there's the possibility of a loophole, but the risk on Macs is minimal, yet the risk of virus's on PC based systems is humongous and has been for years.

Sorry you dont like my post but i dont give a ****.

The risk is not from virus's or worms but hackers being able to gain access to your mac through open ports or causing Dos attacks on your system, hackers run port probing programms and barrage ping your system, Macs are as vulnerable as PC's for this.

The post is to show dont believe everything you read about Leopard being bullet proof, they have made mistakes with the firewall which didnt exist in Tiger if you have sensitive data on your system these problems affect you.

The time of "I run a mac so it doesnt matter" are getting less applicable, viruses and worms are the least of problems these days.

Personally I always run a hardware firewall, and on a mac system, Little snitch and Net Barrier.

Ooooerrrr... got out of bed the wrong side this morning did we...? I didn't say I didn't like your post, I said I wasn't sure what your point was. I really don't think there's any need - nor do you have the right - to reply to me in this manner. People are allowed to challenge posts and threads on here, as I did, and you show considerable immaturity in your response. I didn't expect that from you.

I quite agree, nowhere near as widespread though eh.

I don't believe everything I read about whatever I read about and am old enough, and mature enough (see above reference to immaturity) to evaluate what I read and thus form my own opinion thank you.

Again, I agree... but this is a concern for Mac owners that is very recent, and hasn't been around for 10 years. I have both a Mac and a PC, and love and use them both.

Hmmm... you really have a thing going on here re Mac v's PC's don't you... perhaps talking to someone, or even professional counseling may help.

Well jolly good for you you clever person you, well done, aren't you clever... (

Thanks for those interesting points mho. I have read them, evaluated them, and having considered your opinion, have formed my own opinion of you and have disregarded them as coming from someone with an issue, attitude, and who ought to show signs of maturity in response.

You are one of those users who seem to always want to turn any Mac question this into a Mac v's PC debate, of which I know the OP (i.e. me) had no intention. Now, the thread is about 'Anyone upgraded yet'... not about Mac v's PC's - so let's get back on topic eh. If the tp team sees fit to remove my post so be it, at least you are likely to have read it and thus will have seen my response.

tMM reaches for the 'Ignore' button, and 'Report Post' button.

Have a good day.

I upgraded the 5 demo machines at work - all went fine. Will get round to doing my Macbook and iMac over the weekend.

Although I'd say it's more evolutionary than revolutionary I'd say it's well worth the £85.

And I'm REALLY looking forward to the Stack for downloads :)

Well said, tmm. I get really hacked off with all this 'evidence' about vulnerabilities in OSX. Do you remember the "Oh, we've found a mac virus!!!" last year which was produced in a laboratory just to prove a point.

Back in the real world

1) I've yet to see any evidence of a mac suffering an attack - outside of a laboratory.

2) most macs (and PCs) will be run behind hardware firewalls these days anyway.

3) nothing unusual in a couple glitches to be found in the first version of a new operating system (look at Vista!!)

4) "Sorry you dont like my post but i dont give a ****." is disgraceful on a forum such as this and deserves an apology.

It's far to early in the day for a proper rant so I'm off to kick the cat

C'mon guys, don't let this get into a MAC V PC thread, they end in tears, just before lock down :(

Can we get back on topic please.

Has anyone configured "Spaces" yet? How do you find it?

King.

Mine has spaced out on me. If I click on an app it doesn't change spaces. I cba rebooting just now :)

I'm expecting a delivery of the on OS today. Now, should I upgrade or clear everything out and start again?

If I clear it all and start again what is the easies way of reinstalling everything on a Mac?

I backed up everything to a network (1TB Imomega RAID Storage) drive/dvds and did a complete reinstall. The beauty with working in Lightroom is that all the image data is stored in Libraries. All you need to do is place the libraries back and direct Lightroom to the masters after the re-install (same for Aperture).

A clean install is by far the cleaner way to go. But be sure everything is backed up.

Thanks for that. Can I just copy the applications across from my backup or do I have reinstall from disk?

I used the user migrate thingy, I first backuped to bootable USB2 HDD, then did a clean install of Leopard, then used the Migrate to copy back user settings and apps... All worked beautifully, only hiccup has been Aperture needed registeration details re-entering, which meant I had to find the box. Other than that its been a nice easy transistion.

As for spaces, Ive not really configured it, ive enabled it and ive got 4 desktops, i switched between them using my 5th mousebutton in an "expose" style way... So far its my Killer Leopard feature... Im yet to try TimeMachine, but, tbh, having spent the last couple of years refining my own backup methods im not all that interested in it.

You will have to reinstall the application/s. Doesnt take long. You can save preferences/settings/stuff and simply load them when reinstalled with many apps now.

Always recommend backing up your files, reinstall/upgrade/day to day.

I didn't have to reinstall any apps! I used the data migration app that executed when I started the install to select what items I wanted to backup i.e. accounts, network settings, my documents and data, and all applications, then this app ran again when Leopard was fully installed.

That application restored all my user accounts (just 1), all my document data and files, all network settings AND all my applications.
