Mac or Windows for Editing

what i want to know is how long its going to be before AV is required for OSX.. theres already the software out there so it must be being required for someone otherwise it wouldnt be written.

It is written to protect Windows users from malicious software being passed on via an unknowing Mac user !!

No seriously this IS what it is for!

I like the quote from this article from a security expert:

"Mac OS X is like living in a farmhouse in the country with no locks, and Windows is living in a house with bars on the windows in the bad part of town,"

I know, the inquirer is an anti-apple news site, doesn't stop that quote from making me laugh however!

Just as a side thing the first EVER virus was written for an Apple, the Apple II but this was before IBM had even thought about building the IBM XT. It is theoretically possible to write viruses for Unix (and hence MacOS or Linux) BUT it is rather more difficult. It is NOT because only maybe 12% are using MacOS because if you were into writing virus software then imaging the Kudos in writing the first Mac Virus and writing 1 of 1 is far better than 512367 of 600000 or whatever the number of Windows viruses is now.

MOST suspected virus attacks on Windows machines are NOT virus attacks at all but mainly trojan attacks from people downloading dodgy software or running scripts sent to them by other people (which might also have been sent maliciously).

Again, so does a W7 PC. It all zips together as much as a mac using decent 3rd party programs. And this comes from someone who can happily use both. All of the examples you give just don't make sense as differences! I certainly don't call anyone a fanboy (unless they give the same usual spiel without good reasons) and we all have our own opinions as to what to use. Some are even comfortable using both. However to say 'it just works' is a pathetic excuse for a reason to buy a mac. There are even examples of people going back the other way in the thread. Put some perspective in a post, consider your reasons and qualify statements! Its all a sane person asks for!

It wasn't until my friend sat me down with his Mac and showed me some of the benefits that he convinced me (although I was still a bit dubious) to get one. I now have a MacBook Pro and the only advice I can give to people - get on, it just works.

Now I understand how people love them so much but how hard it is to explain why. Everything just works as if it was made to fit together. Installing programs, selecting programs, deleting programs, organising photos etc are all so much easier, I look at Windows now and cannot see how this is the norm :S.

I think it's a shame that some people can call Mac fans "fanboys" although will say things like "I'd never use a Mac". Use one for a week - I bet you change your mind :)

I found that funny too but I would suggest that this would be closer the mark:

"Mac OS X is like living in a farmhouse in the country with good locks and a fantastic view, and Windows is living in a house with bars on the windows in the bad part of town with good locks and a big guard dog."

The point is it IS harder to attack a machine running UNIX full stop.

IT IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE THOUGH ESPECIALLY VIA A TROJAN. This is route of the only two major security problems that got out into the open recently. They were scripts added to the install routines of iLife09 and something else and then dumped onto a trojan site.

Let's all Agree to Disagree.

The guy who started the thread could be in fact a Sinclair man out for a bit of Evil doing.

Regards:bang:.

i use one a lot of the time and its not as good as you think and really this old saying of once you go mac you never go back is that alot of the time you can't.

when you get a mac you pay alot of money for the mac, then money to replace your external HDD's, software etc. and it costs a fortune! so when you get a mac you don't want to spend more money to change back to windows.

Why would you need to change your external HDs?

same old same old...
locking thread in .... 5...4...3...2...

Aw tish p'shaw, it's fun. :p

You do realise that modern spyware/virus software takes up megabytes of memory (usually 20-30) on computers with gigabytes of memory, don't you? They also take up so little processor power that they are just not noticed. Again, use a modern PC and its all down to personal preference. Spouting misinformed nonsense doesn't help anyone choose the right computer for them!

Menthel, with all due respect, my nonsense is not quite as misinformed as you may think.

I work as a system administrator, and manage a very large network of Windows PC's and servers, and I see for myself every day how well (or not) Windows works.

I find that most Wintards like yourself have never used a Mac in your life, but are happy to slag them off at every opportunity.

I gave an honest opinion as a computer professional who uses both PC and Mac platforms on a daily and professional basis.

I have a few Sinclairs, Amstrads and BBCs in the attic if anyone wants one :)

I hear this all the time "they just work". Yes they do just work , as does a properly configured windows computer.

Some people love the apple way , i personally hate it as my decisions are taken for me , everything is chargeable with apple , everything costs mega money and yes it works nice but so does alot of other stuff. Everything is locked down , harder to change/modify imo

The only good thing i think of when i think of apple is that it forces others to up their game and bring out nicely engineered products out (which i think apple does well)

Matt

P.S My computer runs faultless , never crashed , has esetnod32 anti virus which is amazing might i add and i would take on ANY mac and beat it, in performance stakes im sure!

So, you start the name calling? If you bothered to read my posts you will see I use both systems happily. However you try to justify your posts are invalidated by your posting behaviour. Some people really don't understand.

Can I ask a Question please.

Without going into Super prices and angry comments.

I bought the 27 inch iMac for it's Screen size and the Definition of the Photo and Video it displays.

Can anybody say that the Screen Definition is not Fantastic, and one of it's main Attributes.

Please be kind.

Regards.

Nowt wrong with the 27". The screen is stunning and the computer isn't bad either. It was one of the options I was considering before spreading the money around on lenses and a smaller 24" monitor. It's the perfect form really!

That's the Real points I thought of when I had the battle in my Head between Pc and Macs available at the time.

Maybe the Laddo who started the Thread could think about that.

Thanks for that.

No probs! I actually use and like macs as well as pcs, although I don't think some people believe me!

Like that film with the Japanese schoolkids on the island? I like both so I guess I could argue with myself! ;)

maybe we just need a sticky mac vs pc thread where people can just battle it out to the death :)

Can we have a whole section of Mac v PC then we can have the same arguments in every thread within the section.

Well must be tea time but first will have to kick the wife off my Mac.

Beam in later.

Regards.

Part timer! Get her a macbook, job done.

Believe me she would have one but just after I bought the Mac she bought a Vaio.

Now after she has played with the Mac I cannot get her off it she loves the screen for Photo editing.

Regards:shrug:.

I think if the mods are going to let discussions like this go on for 4 pages, there may as well be a PC vs Mac thread stickied, then they know which thread to keep an eye on xD

There are so many people that simply love Windows you could sell the Vaio and buy her a Macbook :)

I owned a Sony Vaio a while ago, it was a really nice laptop

Your going for tea to play with your big ipod touch? lol

imo the ipad is just another hook to lure you into the app store and then to undo your wallet, place a permenant tie to it with an aim to totally empty it! Bring on the android tablet thats coming soon!!

Each to their own. Ive had iphones, macs, imacs etc and always gone back to windows which must mean i prefer windows.

You don't have to buy things from the app store! You can just get free things or leave it alone completely.

I know im only winding. Like i said, each to their own , i just felt like i was constantly being squeezed when i owned apple products , for instance itunes is an integral part of osx , mobileme now is (which costs), its almost like your made to feel bad for not subscibing(paying) for their services.

Open source is the future imo and i think google with android and the up and coming chrome os will eventually be crowned the os king.

We'll see but they have a long way to go to make a dent in either Windows or MacOS. You need killer apps too and getting companies like Adobe on board is a must.
