i am very much interested in purchasing an iMac (27in screen version) for a lot of reasons including photography! in the past couple of years i have become a complete Apple convert since owning an iphone and using an iMac on a course i did.

so i suppose i am just a little bit interested how many people use Mac compared to PC here?

and what are the main differences you have noticed if moving from PC to Mac?

sorry if this has been posted before but i looked

I personally use a PC, only because when I left university the software I needed wasn't available for the Mac. I would love to change over to the mac, they are far better for photographers/ designers in all ways. I just couldn't afford to buy all the software again though! When I come into some money I would be at the Apple shop iun an instant!

You can run nearly all the same software on each.

It's personal, so like buying a camera buy what appeals most to you.

If however it's performance that is the key, you get more performance to pound value from a PC.

I use a PC:)

Why, oh why do people ask this at least once a week?!?!?!?!?!? Use the search function!

The simple answer is it depends on what is in your budget and whether or not you get on with OSX. Remember that most of the photo software (specifically adobe) is exactly the same on both PC and Mac.

Ps. first person to say 'it just works' is a gullible marketing man's dream.

to be fair its a pain to search for this topic..

if you put "pc or mac" into a search for example half of it will be ignored because the words are too short.

we needs us a sticky :)

That is not a thread that should ever exist! Can you imagine it, 300 replies of 'it just works' from people who haven't used a PC since 2003. ;)

I moved over about 6ish years ago when I was at uni and the transition was almost seamless and for all intents and purposes has been no problem since. Once i started uni I didn't really do much PC gaming (wolfenstein/doom) anymore and I was mostly using office & coding/programming type applications.

My compaq laptops screen gave up the ghost so was in need of a replacement, it was a high-spec model and was only a few years old so a similar/better spec replacement was going to cost me a pretty fair wedge of cash which I couldn't afford. That was when I started looking at mac's and I wound up with an ex-display 12" G4 iBook from PC World, picked up student version of office too and never had a jot of problem with compatibility between mac/windows files.

I've since upgraded to a MacBook, a bit over 3 years ago now, but my other half has been using the iBook and it's still going strong. I have also got a Windows netbook (bought for it's convenient size/weight to take on holiday) and it hardly gets used tbh. I had to use it the other day to run a programme to unlock a huawei modem, but otherwise it's been down side of the sofa for a few months untouched.

Macs are prettier, quieter, less upgradable and more costly for the amount of processing power you get.

I own a Mac Mini, amongst a variety of other computers. It does what I want it to do admirably (nothing to do with photography).

The main difference I noticed buying a Mac was it came with an operating system pre-installed that I didn't want and had to remove. However, you didn't ask about operating systems ;).

a bit subjective, there are some very nice looking PC cases about with practically silent fans ;)

I know it's subjective and I have a quiet PC (no CPU fan). The mini still wins on that score though, it's a lovely compact unit and really quiet. Once I put Windows 7 on it even became useable :p

I use Macs and PC's. Overall I prefer my Mac. BUT that's a personal preference. Others will think different.

Best suggestion is go either to the Trafford centre or the Bull Ring and visit the Apple store. You are free to try ( Play) with the machines. No real hassle from the staff. And they can answer your questions if you have any.

Then you can decide if you want a Mac or a PC. Do you think it's value for money? If you are happy with what you see then buy one if not there is always PC World ( who also sell Macs :))

NOT AGAIN!!!!!!!

if you are a Mac user go and get mac simples !!!

and yes, PC's can be really really quiet to the point you wont notice they are on ..

Mods, please close before my head explodes.....

Pfft. It's better than the spam threads in OOF :p

What's more "Mac vs PC" is the wrong question. I defy anyone that couldn't see my Mac mini to determine it was a Mac while using it (no cheating and looking at the hardware info / control panel).

The question that should be asked is "OSX or Windows?"

Point of order... they're OS's the question should be which UI do you prefer? :D Most people don't know how to use the OS these days ;)

I use PC's and though, I do envy the sleek looks of the iMac, my upbringing, heritage and sheer stinginess would not allow me to spend the ridiculous amounts of money requested for a Mac.

Especially since I can build a much higher specced PC for a much reduced price.

If you are a bit short on cash you could always buy a PC since they are cheaper than Macs (hardware wise) and then install OS X.

I never understand this argument. I pretty much exclusively use PS, LR, and the web. Once the software is loaded....I could be working on a mac or a PC and it would make no difference, no more/less enjoyable.

To the OP as you can see this is something that comes up a lot, and has fans on both sides who will argue their case, which usually leads to these threads being closed.

Personally prefer Mac, but try both and see what you think. If you have an apple store near you they really are great and will give you lots of advice and food for thought.

Don;t ignore the fact that some say "Macs simply work" for me that is why I love them. it just seems to work how I like things to.

Also PC's are not as bad as some say they are, if you like tweaking and playing with your hardware then PC is definitely the way to go.

Even the PC boys have to admit that the iMac is a gorgeous piece of kit tho.

they dont simply work at all though, i can safely say that we get jsut as many mac issues come through to the IT dept as we do windows..

if they did it with a matte screen.. :D

As I previously said, I own both sorts. PCs simply work as well. I do not understand in what way Macs "simply work" better than PCs. Perhaps a Mac user could explain this comment in the context of the "Mac or PC" question, which is not a question about operating systems.

My personal preference is Mac I must say. The screens are beautiful for photo viewing and editing. The "they just work", hhmm I don't know but, they just do! No crashes, no not responding messages, all daily occurrences for me at work using windows!

Mac users are simple.. :p It isn't a long way to Mac's simply work ;) :D

I mean that in the way osx works. I know they break, all computers do. I mean that in the sense of the operating system and it seems more intuitive to me anyways.

Us mac users like the gloss screen, it lets us see our smug face of satisfaction every time we use it:D

Thanks for everyones input. Even if some of the responses were completely uncalled for.

Just for the record - I use the TP iPhone app so searching is not that easy. But I searched and didnt get to find threads that answered my query fully so asked a question. I am pretty sure you don't have to read a thread you don't want to. Or don't have to input into a discussion if you do t want to. There are plenty of us new folks around here that want to ask the sane questions as before so please bear with us!!

Mac! Ignore all the jealous PC users :bonk:

Yup,Ignore us with our new Pc and Lens Cause we just saved £1k on buying a new computer :p

I joke. There is one thing i would say about both systems, They do the same thing with different looks :)

Go for a Mac. I love my MacBook pro 13, and with a number of iMacs about s/h for round scouts £600 I'm tempted if I had the funds....:(

The 'It just works' thing is very subjective, and for all I know windows 7 might do a lot of the things that mac os x has done for years.

I would say that IF, and it's a big if, you buy into (pun intended) the Apple way of doing things, then the fact that the software all ties in so well is a big plus for me.

I'll go take some photos, plug the camera in and transfer to iphoto. Sort them out and a couple of clicks later they're online on mobile me gallery.

Or I'll fill in an invoice in Pages, click share and select email as PDF and all I have to type in is the email address and any message before hitting send.

Or if I'm out and someone gives me their contact details and I put it on my iPhone, those details will be on all my macs and pc's within minutes.

Another funny one is that I actually had no idea where my photos were on the hard drive. I knew they were there, and I knew they got backed up by time machine, but I spend 0% time sorting file systems and archiving out and 100% time on the fun stuff.

Those tie ins are hardly exclusive. Plug in my camera, transfer using LR (iphoto is a crock of poop) and then share using flickr.

Any of the office programs will email and with a plugin can do as pdf.

There really is nothing between the OS'es, it all really depends on which you prefer.
