I have a WD 250gb slim external HD and its suddenly stopped working. It has been working fine and when i reconnected it an hour ago it failed to mount. I have run the **** Utility, tried to verify, repair and mount it but it comes up with "error to mount"

All my work is on it, files, films, all my professional photography portfolio, EVERYTHING :-(

Any help is appreciated.

I also had a WD passport drive fail to connect (PC) and found it was the interface that had died. I broke open the case and installed the drive in another case....worked okay and I got the data off it.
If it's one of the small black ones with a rubber base then the top is glued down in a few places but can be separted with a little care.
I have a USB caddy that you can borrow to pop the drive in if needed.

Have you tried it in a different computer?

I had a similar problem, it turned out to be because I hadn't properly ejected the drive last time I used it, and so it thought it was still mounted.
So I had to connect it to a different computer, mount it, and eject it, then it worked fine.

This might not be what is happening with yours, but thought it was worth posting just in case.

djs

djs, yes i have tried it on a newer Macbook Pro. No luck as of yet:(

Sounds like the same as mine. Does it sound like the drive is trying to start? Mine was working fine and then all of a sudden, I was opening a folder and the whole thing disappeared. The drive suffered from the click of death:(:shake:

Have you been on the WD site? They have all sorts of troubleshooting advice

No click of death.
The LED circle lights up and its spinning but not mounting.

Does sound like the drive is not being detected. I think the only answer is to get the HD into another enclosure. This could be a problem in Bulgaria. However I did google apple Bulgaria and there is a dealer there. Now my bulgarian is a bit rusty ( actually seized would be a better way of putting it)

Here's the link http://www.apple.bg/bul/.

Alternatively maybe you can get an enclosure sent from the UK. I don't know how long that would take or the cost? You may be better off saving any additional picks to your hard drive and trying to recover the images when you get home.

I can understand your worry. I tend to back up twice when I'm abroad. onto to 2 separate hard drives ( from 2 different manufacturers ) Yes I may be paranoid!!!!

I do hope it all works out

I just did a massive 20+ gb dump onto the drive last night - just to add to my woes.
