Yes
i have a 24 inch imac which is great, but when viewing raw files it starts using loads of cpu and memory before freezing
for example if i scroll through several raw files,,but this does not happen with jpegs
any ideas

They'll be a lot bigger for a start, well over 20Mb from your 5Dii

I had a similar issue with windows when I got my 5Dmkii
I had to switch from using 32 bit cs5 to using 64 bit cs5 for the extra memory release.
32 bit would give me lock ups when editing RAW files.
How much RAM do you have at your disposal?

Does the imac allow the use of a scratch disk ? If so you might want to put an SSD in for that purpose.

also yes as much ram as feasible , and potentially a new faster hard drive

Incidentally where are you opening the raws from ? - if its off the card your problem could be reading speed - I'd copy them to a hard disk first.

its a 2009 24 inch iMac
3.06 intel core 2 duo with 8gb ddr3 ram with a 1tb drive
files are opened off hard drive
seem to have same problem using lightroom or preview

whats the maximum ram it can take ? (my main machine has twice as much , but its a pc)

also how old/full is your hard drive

as far i know its maxed out with 8gb
but i read that most macs can take almost double than what apple recommend
hard drive 1 tb and got 810gb left
i have an external that i put everything on

Unless the memory is faulty, it's not the memory. And it's pretty unlikely to be the hard drive speed because of the CPU usage. There's something wrong - probably with core image code which is what OS X uses to decode raws.

Repair permissions on the drive and check for OS X updates - come back if that doesn't fix it.

download mackeeper or Onyx and run throug htheir cleaning tools.

I have a mcabook pro mid 2009 with 8gb of ram and it opens lightrrom and raw files just fine.

Give those 2 progs a go and see what happens

8 gb should be fine . I had a similar problem on my Mac it turned out that i had two versions of ACR plug ins raw up dates .

can you explain how to check t his out

with regards to repairing permissions and using onyx ive done that several times
when scrolling through raw files in preview or lightroom the cpu usage can go up to 150% or higher

update
opened up some smaller raw files around 8mb from my old 30d and cpu usage shot up again to around 160% + so it was not just with the bigger 5dmk11 files.
i then opened a few large jpeg file and scrolled through them very fast for around 60 second . the cpu usage bar never went above 4o% was averaging about 25%
the jpegs were around 13mb files so slightly smaller than the 5d2 but alnost double the 30ds raw files
so it dont like raw files

just found a 28mb jpeg file . made around 8 copys of it and scrolled fast in preview
cpu hit 60% at 1st then peaked out at around 30-35%

Can you create a new user account and try it there?

It really sounds like something in raw processing is broken.

What kind of cat do you have on the iMac? Mountain Lion?

Yes it's mountain lion
I did create anew user account a while ago
For other reasons
But I'll try again when I get home from work
It's more of a problem when viewing raw files than the processing stage
Although viewing them in Lightroom does cause CPU to go mad

just tried on a new account and still getting high up to 200% cpu usage

Can you dropbox me a couple of raws?

I have 2 ML boxes here - one a laptop with a paltry 8GB RAM, the other a "reasonably" well specified tower. I could take some timings for you.

If you download the latest raw plug in , you have to delete any previous raw plug ins up dates or it can cause problems . it took me over a year to find the solution

Put the file in your public folder then right click and copy the link. Either post it here (where everybody will be able to access it) or PM me.

Hmm, modern versions of Adobe on Macs don't really work like that. But if you want to go looking start in /Library/Application Support. You might also like to look in ~/Library/Application Support (those folders are hidden in ML - you'll need to use the finder "Go to Folder" option)

I'll post some files later when I get home from work
With regards to raw plugin would it be an idea to say do a clean install of Mac OS and start from fresh
I know everyone says macs don't need that but as an ex windows user that's what I did whenever I had major problems

It's an option. And not a tough one.

If you have a firewire external disk then you can install OS X to that and then boot from it without disturbing your current install. In fact if you have an 8 GB thumbdrive you can do it on that - http://macs.about.com/od/MountainLi...Os-X-Mountain-Lion-On-A-Non-Startup-Drive.htm

Usually I just install a new version of OS X to a new internal drive and then keep the old one in case of "foibles".

been away for a week so not replied to my thread
just been viewing my latest pics and been getting lots of freezing, memory pro been showing memory being eaten up just viewing a few raws

ive just done a clean install on to an external hard drive
so far no lock ups or freezing, but still getting high cpu usage when zipping through raw files
seem to have more free memory although viewing a few raws does eat up a lot of memory. but not quite as much as my original install
now I'm puzzled
should i do a clean install on my original drive and see how it goes
only by doing that will i be able to eliminate the drive , although im not convinced thats the problem
my girlfriend has a mac mini so i guess i should try and see what happens when viewing raw on that
