Woohoo, got the little WD Passport external HD I wanted :)

Now I just need to find some software to get it to do what I want. To keep things simple, I basically just want to set it to syncronise itself with a folder defined by me on the built in HD. Then each time I connect the disk, it just syncs the contents to the folder. Bit like when you plug in your ipod.

Any recommendations? This is a bit new to me. My normal system of backing up is non existent.

I can recommend

Superduper - for making bootable backups etc

Chronosync - I think this should do what you ask

I use both and they are very nice bits of software

Do you want a 2 way sync or just a one way sync? If it is the latter you can use Automator built into OSX.

You can also use it for 2 way syncing but I've found that if you have the same file on drives A & B, then delete it from drive B, it is copied back from drive A to drive B, rather than also being removed from drive A...

Thanks for the input guys. I looked at using automator and found an 'action', but it all seemed a little complicated, so I spent the $$'s on a copy of ChronoSync. It's great, does just what I wanted. I now just plug in the HD whenever I feel like it, make a cuppa, unplug and put HD in safe storage again. All synced and updated without me doing anything manually. :D

In theory, I should never loose my images. :wood:

Can recommend ChronoSync - very simple to configure synchronised bu and also to schedule the bu's

Following what's been recommended here very carefully :), and have gone with ChronoSync too. Prefect for what I need, especially after the disaster I went through with my internal hard drive failing.
