Hi all,

I'm interested in what mac editing software you use both for RAW conversion and JPEG post-processing, aside from Lightroom & Photoshop as I'm not really in to the monthly subscription thing!

Anyone use Affinity, Luminar, DxO or Corel AfterShot? Is Photoshop Elements good enough for general use? Any others that you'd recommend, including noise reduction software etc?

Thanks :)

I'm a committed LR user, but Iridient is pretty good as a raw converter.

Anyone use Affinity?

ME, ME, ME!!!

… and I could only recommend this UK made pixel editor. :)

For RAW conversion. it's the Danish Capture One all the way.

Both free one month trial and both with or without subscription. :D

Have a good time!

I now have Photoshop Elements 15 which is good enough for me as I use it with Lightroom 6. I have Coral Paintshop Pro X8 which is not to bad, just finished a trial of Affinity and thought that was pretty good, plus I have DXO Optics 9. You have quite a choice, and anyone of them are very good. Download the Google Nik Collection, as Dfine is a very good NR.

I downloaded the free trial…
Installs in a jiffy on my MacPro! :D

Price is pretty cheap and poor colour engine too! :(

Too complicated for nothing and a converter with
poor WB and DRL is not staying in my app folder…
not to mention the taboo (in my book!) vibrance and
they deserve the gold medal for the greatest number
of sliders, tabs etc.

Default interface is light grey but maybe tweaked in
the prefs.

I didn't say I liked it but basic raw conversation is OK

Thanks @Stephen L I don't know anything about Iridient except that your post prompted me to remember that someone else also recommend it! Do you also use PS?
I have PS but only use it for composites such as combining text layers. I can do all the colour editing I want in LR.

Affinity Photo for pixel editing and LR6 standalone for Raw conversion and Apple photos for organising and creating slideshows etc.
plus the raw conversion done in LR looks better once its in Apple photos

I use LR5 stand alone and have just purchased Affinity photo as they it is 20% off till the end of the month.

I prefer RAW editing in LR and Affinity is for bit LR cannot do.

Depends on what body you have, might be worth getting LR5 stand alone to see how you get on.

I like the look of Affinity, which also has a RAW converter,

As pixel editor, it is very, very highly recommendable. :)
I use it with greatest pleasure since version 1!

As a RAW converter it is crap and here are two reasons:
  1. you can tackle only one RAW file at the time with
the goal to convert it to JPG and edit. It is meant to
accomodate RAW conversion but it is in no way a
    dedicated RAW converter. :(

  2. The Develop Persona has pretty much the same fea-
tured sliders and old thinking than all the other soft-
wares of that nature and, though the engines are po-
werful, it is useless in my workflow. :(

I would like to add,i dont mind one photo raw conversion at a time, the main reason i dont like affinity for raw conversion is
the highlights and shadows engine is poor compared to LR which i think is outstandingly good in comparison, the other features of the develop module arent too bad but
the shadows highlights spoils what would be ok otherwise

When o started it's was aperture and photoshop. Now that aperture is gone it's lighter room and photoshop. I tried affinity but to be honest it's not photoshopl

It mainly depends on the chemicals in the developer I find rum and coke often helps in achieving a good photo :police:

The trouble is I don't like the Adobe monthly subscription and I also don't like the fact that if I buy the standalone LR then it doen't contain all the CC features & also doesn't benefit from updates as CC does. So I'm either going to stick with my ancient version of LR or find an alternative!

FWIW I use Lightroom 5 and Elements 15.

I was pretty impressed with both Affinity and Capture One. Just a side note - Affinity trial is for 10 days period.

DXO is a good raw converter, though some find it a little too automated (handy for faster throughput though). I also like On-one photo suite, and the latest version also has a raw converter, but it's had mixed reviews from users here.

I have LR and PS cloud subscription.

I like LR and its catalogue. I cannot stand PS only because I cannot use it. I can do about 3 things in it and do them quite badly. Not bad for someone who's had it going on 2 years. I don't get on with books or videos as mine never looks the same as the video or book and I can't find what they're talking about!

So, I downloaded a free trial of Affinity. Only 10 days or so though. It wasn't bad at all and I succumbed to the offer of 20% off and bought the full programme. I used it for the 4th time tonight and managed a sky replacement in 4 minutes.

I really like it. I'm going to resist giving up my CC for the time being it I'm hoping to give it up later this year or early next year.

udemy do some very good tutorials by I've forgot lol, will check later

Well I've stumped up for Affinity, now just have to sort out a RAW converter! Are the Simon Foster tutorials good?
yes they are very good and I have to agree the AP Raw engine isn't brilliant, its ok, the shadows and highlights aren't a patch on LR but the other stuff is reasonable.they may improve it perhaps but depending on what you shoot?
what is your platform and cameras?

I'm a Mac user and currently have a Canon 550D that is about to be upgraded, though I haven't quite decided to what yet! It'll either be a Canon 77D, 80D or 7D2, or alternatively a Panasonic G80. I'm sure you're right about the RAW converter being upgraded by Affinity as time goes on.

Also bought the first Simon Foster Affinity tutorial, so thanks again for the recommendation! :)
