Mac Book Pro - SD card reader

I am having problems getting my Mac Book Pro to see my SD card reader with iphoto. Has anybody had similar and/or know of any issues / fixes?

Also, after trying to read the card in the reader, when I replaced it back into my D3100 it couldn't use the card anymore. It wouldn't even allow me to re format it again. Almost as if the card reader had messed the card up????

Been there. Card cannot be read, camera doesn't ' recognise the card Computer doesn't know the card is there. The card is probably toast. In fact I'd ditch the card. Had a similar problem last year, and it took a professional recovery company to recover the images. The whole disk structure had been corrupted and it took forensic level software to recover the shots. Not sure if the problem was with the reader as it works fine with other cards. My suspicion was with the card itself. Anyway it's history now.
Just a thought though the MacBook Pro should have an SD card reader built in if it's less than about 4 years old. have you tried other cards with the reader to see if it works OK

I bought the MBP in 2008 I think so no integrated card reader

The card is a PNY, which I'd imagine is not particularly good as I bought it in Currys. The reader is about 8 years old so maybe change that as well.
