Mac Book Pro & Projector

Hi,

I have bought a mac book pro - something I will be using for giving talks as well.

My old windows PC laptop had the standard plug in the back for the projector lead, but this doesn't.

It is a July 2012 Retina model - how do I get it to display on a projector? Do I need to buy a new cable that goes in HDMI slot - and will it work with almost all projectors?

what connector does the projector have?

if its a retina you should just need a thunderbolt/displayport adapter, for example if your projector is VGA - http://store.apple.com/uk/product/MB572Z/B/mini-displayport-to-vga-adapter?fnode=51

I don't have a projector - I use the ones at the venues until I can afford one.
So far they are all "standard" in that they have VGA cable.

EDIT: The laptop has a HDMI port, should I use that or the thunderbolt?

either or, same difference really when it comes to low res like a projector

Cn anyone recommend a projector? HD would be ideal but would rather spend under 500.

again define HD, 720 or 1080? for £500 youll struggle to be honest.

what is its main use going to be?

also if wanting HD, you wont be wanting the VGA adapter.

I'm not sure - I'm showing photographs and 1080p video but I just need vaguely good quality.
It is for giving talks.

static or mobile?

just because a projector needs a very controlled lighting environment to display images correctly. trust me on that, work ended up spending £4000 on one to get good colour representation while not having to black the entire room out. and its not even HD.

Mobile. I just need something to show my photos on at small talks. Doesn't need to be the best in the world. Maybe not HD then!
