Has anyone here tried one of the M42 lenses with an adapter on their Canon. I've seen some shots taken with them and they look pretty good. And there are stacks of these lenses on Ebay all the time. Just wondered if it's worth getting one to play with as a MF lens.

in a word yes.
I have one on a bellows thingy for macro playing, cracking quality, at a bargain price, just ensure you can stop the iris down, or the lens will stay wide open.

There's a 50mm 1.8 for £5.99 on there at the mo. Very tempting :-)

not sure , but there might be a focusing issue ,,,cant quite get infinity or similar .

I'll investigate a bit then. I guess in the case of a fast 50mm or 135mm I'm not thinking of the kind of application where that would be needed but it's worth considering.

I have a solingor 135 F/2.8 M42 lens for my canon, it's quite good actually but as you know, completely manual :)

Manual is good - that's the part I like :-)

I have a Carl Zeisse 135mm f3.5 M42 lens that I'm in the process of testing out on my 20D and 1D mkII, as has already been said manual everything, but the quality of the images it's producing looks amazing (we're talking 'L' class good here)

will post some pictures if anyones interested

I would certainly be interested. I'm watching loads on Ebay at the moment so I might just dive in and grab one if it looks good. I found a forum yesterday that's designed for users of manual lenses and cameras. Some of it's a bit retentive but there is a gallery that's worth checking out and a lot of pics taken with M42 and Canon/Nikon DSLR. Some great pics. http://forum.manualfocus.org/

I have a Pentacon 50 f1.8 and a 135 f2.8 and they both produce great images.

However, I did have to open the lenses up to remove the spring that holds the aperture open so I could manually open and close it. Not too technical but bare in mind you may have to do this - there are plenty of tutorials on the interweb. However, for a £5 lens, it is not that scary!

The 50 is great on the macro bellows!

You can get M42 converter rings that have the AF chip thing on that allows the camera to confirm beep/light up the focus point when in focus. In my experience it is a bit hit and miss but does come in handy.

I don't really use the 135 now though.
