Please can I get some recommendations for an adapter with AF confirmation that will work with my Canon 5D "classic". I'd like to be able to use any M42 lens, though according to this website not all can be used - fair enough. I'd like an adapter that will allow me to use as many M42 lenses as possible.

Non-AF confirmation adapters can also be listed if you think they'll work better that AF-confirm ones. Links to e bay would be appreciated!

Thanks :)

How alike are the M42 lenses and the FD lenses?

I bought recently an adapter with AF confirmation for my 450D with some FD lenses and it works a treat! Only £35 off fleabay!

Different lenses in each type have different qualities - so many it would be difficult to compare! Of course you get extremely good and not so good FDs and m42s...

Although I'd like this thread to be about M42 lenses, I'd be interested in where you got the FD adapter from (evilbay link?). Also, will it work with a 5D?

I meant camera connection with M42's and FD.
In theory it should do... bare with me a sec I'll have to dig out the link!

EDIT: Sorry the one I purchased doesn't adapt to 5D. Sorry to have wasted time!

I have an M42 adapter without AF confirm and it wont work with my old canon film slr, the mirror catchs of the adapter. I would imagine it would be the same on FF.

Thanks Adam - I know there are some adapters that work with some lenses on the 5D, ie. a lot of the Zeiss lenses won't work, same as certain Takumar's. However as in the link I mentioned in my OP, there are many lenses that will work.

What I'm trying to establish is a list of the adapters that work with a 5D with links to where they can be found (usually on e Bay) and what lenses people have used with them without problems.

I have a Roxen one from Ebay for my 20D which has focus confirm and is nicely made, no idea if it would work on your 50d though. Ideally I guess you want to remove as much of the back of the adapter as possible for maximum clearance for the mirror. If you use fully manual lenses without the aperture push pin this will be no problem.

I have a cheap adapter for old Pentax K mount lenses, which I used to use on my 400D absolutely fine- went to use the lens the other day on my 40D and the little lever that sticks out the back of the lens catches something and I can't stop the aperture down now- I'm sure I have used it before on the 40D and definately on the 400D  With a 5D I wouldn't want to risk it catching the mirror..

Had a quick search and Novoflex seems to come up all the time. Looking at the web site it seems that it's mainly Leica lenses cause a problem with the mirror. But it may be a problem with other lenses as well.

Here's a link to the Novoflex web site. May be of help

The adapters from ebay seller HappyPageHK are excellent...I have a Contax / Yashica one and the thickness is just right (others I tried were too thin and the 5D's mirror would catch the rear of certain lenses).

Big_is is currently selling some very well machined adapters as well.

Right, thanks for the replies everyone - I guess I'm going to try making this work and have ordered an AF-confirm adapter from Big_is on the bay. Now off to find some lenses that could work :)
