M42 Lens Questions

How do you know if a lens is a M42 fitting ?

i've got one that I use with an adaptor to my canon camera , to practice manual focus .

I don't mind picking them up cheap at carboots and eBay etc just to play about with , but how do you know it's a M42 fitting ? As there are a few different brands with this fitting

M42 refers to a standard metric thread size, so the outside diameter of the thread will be 42mm. This should be standard across manufacturers. Likewise M39 will be 39mm.

For more info see here:

[The M42 lens mount is a screw thread mounting standard for attaching lenses to 35 mm cameras, primarily single-lens reflex models. It is more accurately known as the M42 × 1 mm standard, which means that it is a metric screw thread of 42 mm diameter and 1 mm thread pitch.]
