M42 adapter rings

Yes
A couple of weeks back, I picked up a cheap lens in a second hand/junk shop in town, a Samyang 500mm mirror lens, for £20 I thought it could be a bit of fun. It was advertised as having an 'm42 thread' so I duly ordered an m42 adapter ring but when it arrived I couldn't get it to thread all the way on, couple of turns and that was all. Examining the threads on both parts I couldn't see any damage so just put it down to having a bad adapter ring and so ordered another one (different supplier and different ring) and that one won't thread on fully either. Having a quick look it almost looks like the thread pitch is different, the adapter rings look like a coarser thread. It's not coming up against anything, just gets tight. I've tried a little 'force' but it's not going to go any tighter.

So, knowing nothing about these things or what 'thread standards' there might be, what could I be missing ?

Thanks

Chris

It's a T (aka T2) thread. Same 42mm diameter but different pitch. Very common and readily obtainable from China via ebay.

The lens probably has a T thread which is 42mm x 0.75mm rather than M42's 42mm x 1mm. You need to look for T4 adapters for it.

My guess is that it's t-mount and you're missing the actual mount adaptor - without which it will also be off on focus as the mount will be too too short.

T-mount is 42x0.75 rather than m42 which is 42x1.0. It was a semi-universal mount developed so that third party manufacturers could make one lens and switch the adaptor to fit multiple camera mounts.

Ah crap, there's 2 kinds? I was thinking on an M42 adapter for the Fuji. how do you know which lenses fit the standard M42 one?

The thing about the Tx adapters is that you can get them for most camera mounts, so you don't need to daisy-chain adapters, i.e. buy a Fuji specific T mount adapter if that's what you need.

yeah, that's what i thought, but OP is suggesting the lens wouldn't connect right to the adapter on the M42 thread, i thought there was only one type

M42 lenses fit an M42 adapter.

If you research your choice of lens there are very few lenses you'll commonly come across that haven't been discussed online.

So what OP had was not an M42 lens? :/

I was looking at a Helios 44-2 58/f/2, so any standard M42 to Fuji X will do the job?

A quick google on the Samyang 500mm mirror lens brings up a host of results. All say that a T2 adapter is needed.
Do the same for a Helios and they all say M42.
Simples really.

Err..no. That's what the first three replies all clearly agree on. His lens is a t-mount and missing the adaptor from t-mount to the camera mount.

You're most likely to find that lens as an M42, it would be rare to find that lens in any other mount. Nice lens, I have the Autocosmogon (export) version and it gives good results on my X-E2.

Right, he made it seem like it was a specific M42 mount lens, my bad. I get it now.

I think the Helios would be fun to mess about with, not planning anything serious with it. I have a Nikon adapter already on the way so will probably look into some cheapies from them over time too.

It starts out with one adaptor, then it develops into a habit..

Lots of replies since yesterday! The confusion on my part was caused by the seller sticking a label on the lens saying it had an 'm42 mount' and my severe lack of experience in anything related to cameras and lenses.

A 'T' mount arrived in the post at work this morning which I'm sure will fit the lens perfectly.

Thanks chaps.

Chris
