I want a 50mm range lens for portraits on my Fuji X-E1 and don't do enough of them to justify the price of the 56mm f1.2 or the 60mm macro.

I'd like to try the Takumar 50mm f1.4 or maybe even the Helios 44-2 58mm f2 so I'm going to need an adapter for M42 - Fuji-X. Does anyone have any recommendations? I'm not putting hugely amazing glass on the front, so a very expensive adapter is out of the question. I also want to avoid ordering from China direct. I'm unlikely to be using the adapter on multiple lenses so semi-permanently fixing the adapter to lens (with those little tightening screws for example) isn't a problem either.

Happy to take different suggestions around an inexpensive (sub £200) but quality solution for the 50mm (75-90mm) focal length.

Thanks in advance!

There are plenty of m42 adapters available, but there are also a couple of more flexible alternatives. Both the Rollei QBM and one of the Olympus mounts had cheap m42 adapters that would mean that an FX adapter for either of these could do double duty.

Two more lenses for you to consider..
Carl Zeiss Planar 50/1.4 in either QBM or C/Y mount
Minolta Rokkor 55/1.4 or the 1.2

The old faithful Pentacon Auto 50/1.8 MC in the m42 mount is cheaper than chips, often overlooked but a decent performer.

I have both the 1.4 lenses and they're very good. The CZ has a soft glow wide open but sharpens up quickly to become one of the sharpest 50mm lenses available.

I need to sit down and write a guide to using the Rollei QBM lenses on the X-series. Keep an eye out for it on Fujix - there's a good following for using adapted lenses with Fuji bodies on that forum.

Thanks Alastair. The more I look into 50mm options, the more I find! The Fuji-X forum is great for things like that. I've also heard very good things about the CZ Jena Pancolar f1.8.

Re adapters though, I'm guessing then that all the adapters are pretty much the same? The adapters themselves aren't hard to find, but reviews of them are.

Go. Write your guide :)

There's not much difference between FX:m42 adapters that I can see reported. It's a very basic mount.

I have had problems with one model of FX:QBM adapter, but that seems to be the exception.

I know this is an old thread but late night bidding means I now in theory own an xpro1 and while I might at some point buy a fujinon lens I'm thinking manual m42s to start with.

How did you get on with lens choices and adaptors?

Kendo is this one you recommend through using?

It works. It's basic. :)

With adaptors you can be lucky or unlucky - more expensive does not necessarily mean consistent quality, but much more expensive ones tend to be reliably consistent.

I use a K&F Concept Adapter and it works fine. It fits very nice on the XT2 with no play on the mount.

Tony.

There's a great condition K&F Concept adaptor and Helios in the classifieds.....just in case that's what you were after ;)

Ok Ian i'll bite but whats the best price you could do? i was ideally looking for something wider than that lens

Best price I'd do is £35 delivered tbh. Any less and I'd sooner keep it for how much it's worth, even with how little use I use it.

I've was that not all Helios's have the swirly bokeh, does this produce it?
