M25 - variable speed limits

The section of the M25 between the A3 & M3 has quite a few cameras, there's now a couple going round to J9 (Leatherhead) and a couple between the the M4 & M40 junctions. On the northern section (Watford & above) I think I noticed a couple the other day. Generally they are double gantries, so if you can see one on the other carriageway as you approach it, there's a good chance that there's one just in front of you.

I was told by a Surrey Copper, that if you see them come on or change, you have 60 seconds before they become active, and generally they are set to fire at 10% plus 3 mph above what ever they are showing. If there's no VSL in place, they're also not active. But that was a couple of years ago, so I'm not sure if anything has changed.

please don't rely on this being the case. The speed limit is 70mph for cars and is enforceable as are signs with a red ring.

I went through the m62 ones before i realised they where there.. drove miles through them and waited for weeks expecing a summons... that was months ago... my average speed on mway is 80.. but always 50 through actual road works.. i have seen flashes on them.. just not for me..

Came off the M1 tonight.. onto M62 did what I always do... lo and behold I got flashed:( 99% sure it was me.. looked in mirror and i could see all the cars behind me slowing down .. presumably they saw the flash go off and erk

was doing 80.. maybe 82 11 pmish no roadworks so 70 speed limit.. just a few cars behind me otherwise clear...

had a clean licence for about 30 years ..

Hopefully get the day out on the awareness course and no points :(

If your speedo was indicating 80-82mph it's unlikely you were going much faster than 75-77mph as speedos tend to over-read. I know in essence speeding is an absolute offence so in theory you could get done for going 70.1mph, in practice you'll normally be allowed 10% +2mph as it could be difficulte to prove in a court room that your speed was that accurately measured.

It's possible a car on the other carriageway set the $camera off.

Keep you fingers crossed for the next 14 days as that's how long they have to get the NIP in the post.
