Hi

What is a good ethernet adapter to buy to connect my MacBook to the ethernet via RJ45?

Thank you

Apple recommend Belkin, probably not a component you want to skimp on?

Wifi is faster than using an adaptor
I guess it depends if you have modern wifi or not. I'm writing this from an M1 Mac. With a USB ethernet adpater I get the max available speed. With wifi I get about a quarter - I think because the wifi is so old now.

I have tested a windows machine via WiFi and ethernet, and get higher speeds on the ethernet.

I am using a unifi UAP for WiFi.

Ethernet is fastest when the computer has a rj45, if you uses and adaptor , it can only run as fast as the usb adaptor, Wi-Fi is the second fastest depending on what Wi-Fi is in the computer. I have tested an rj45 adaptor on my laptop and it was slower than wifi

Found a ugreen usb to rj45 adapter that i bought for my sons switch, tried that with an old MacBook and get:

690-700Mbps on Ethernet vs 230-250Mbps on Wi-Fi.

Get the same results on Wi-Fi right next to the access point.

Several things impact the max internet connection speed, no?
a) your ISP connection speed
b) router/switch
c) wifi speed or
d) RJ45 adapter speed and laptop connection

The Mac M1's connections support Thunderbolt 3, USB 4 and USB 3.1 gen 2, all plenty fast enough for gigabit speeds.

@steve_lyt perhaps your RJ45 adapter is the weak link in your setup?

My connection is virgin 1gig, and the Wi-Fi setup is 2 ubliquiti pro dishes. Most of the connections are rj45 connected to 1000mbs managed switches.
thanks - makes sense and looks like its the gb switches are the constraint on your wired connection speed. update those to 10gb switches and wired would have the advantage - subject to your isp speed, but still could be worthwhile for NAS connectivity and the like.
