Lynton's 52 for 2010 - Week 29 "Grace"

That is one scary looking mate

Excellent capture. Loads of detail and black and white captures the moodiness perfectly.

That is one scary looking mate

ha ha.. "oops" was it scare or stare this week?

All i asked him before I took the photo was "Is it true, that you like boys?":lol::lol::lol:

LOOOOOOL!!! Well it got the results.....brilliant stare, I like the detail in his stuble I guess it would have been nice if there was the same amount in his forehead but it's still a great image.

Love Single....the colours of sand and sky are amazing, good luck with getting it put on canvas I'm sure it would look great!

Chris,

By first one do you mean the extreme letterbox crop or the original I posted up yesterday? Doesn't matter but just curious..... Different people prefer different things! Mark is a 6ft 4 softie, but was quite amusing the other week in Norwich watching some little 5' 6" 8 stone dripping wet chav offer him outside for a fight. (All Mark wanted was his beer which I was buying!) and Chav thought he was queue pushing! He got a stare not too dissimilar to that one posted up!

yeh it was the extreme letterbox that i liked, it made it look like the figure had been on an epic journey

Great stuff for both weeks, the single theme works much better in the long thin pano, it really gives a sense of solace and emptyness. Nice colours as well!

Stare is a great one, especially in b&w. He's got a real sense of 'b****r off and don't disturb me' look to him. Nice shot, especially as most will be self portrait I suspect this week...

Heh. Grumpy stare alright :)

The composition works well for this shot and there is a good range of tones through the B&W conversion.

Although there is something about the sharpness that's bugging me. Not sure it's soft, but it's not sharp either... Maybe it's just my eyes.

Ian.

I love the subject of stare and it is a really good shot. I think the point of sharpest focus is on the glasses not they eyes - if it was on the eyes it would have been perfect!

Another great image from you Lynton.
I like the tight crop on this image it really brings in the theme of the image.
Well done

Sonia,

Yeah agree with you - shame about detail on the forehead and it looks a bit weird there.......

Gary,

Thanks... B&W was the only way to go to this.

Ian,

Thanks I know what you mean though - it's around the forehead, I think, but I was teaching myself some things in Lightroom, and pushing things a bit. Maybe I've overdone something somewhere.........

Phil,

Another fair comment. I really must remember to get an eye on the AF focus point, half press and recompose.....:bang:

Iain,

Crop? Crop? I was that close to him (and well scared!!!) Thanks again for the positive comments though.

Much appreciated all.....

All i asked him before I took the photo was "Is it true, that you like boys?":lol::lol::lol:

I'll have to remember that next time I want a scary pose from somebody . . . oh and be ready to run as soon as I've taken it as well

 That really is a very good pose. The angle and the expression on his face are absolutely terrifying - looks like he's about to charge right out of the screen at me.

On the whole the PP works well. The B&W suits it perfectly and you've really given it a convincing menacing / moody feel.
But I'm not sure what you've done with the eyes. They look a little odd and too dark  Personally, I'd like a bit more definition between the iris and pupil or a bit of a catch-light in there just to give them some more life.

That's really picky of me because it's a brilliant shot - I'd just love to see it perfect

Sarah,

Good point..... something I hadn't really paid attention to.... :bang:

This quick & dirty 2 min edit any better?

markstarebw2.jpg

 cheers Sarah.

He's a big (huge) softie really.....

I've finally allowed myself to stare at your Stare, Lynton. Wow - that's one scary stare. :D

I love it - it's a great pose, brilliant expression and superb take on the theme. The edit on his eyes lifts it to an even higher plane. A huges :thumbs::thumbs: from me.

Oh, I like the b&w processing, too - I nearly forgot to say that! :)

Jean

OK - Peace.... lilies / white doves being released? Arghhhh.

Then I had a quick think and remembered a quiet little spot in Norwich that I was told about a few months back. Rosary Cemetery.

This is about a 10 minute walk from the City Centre, near the train station and it a cemetery dating from the realm of George IV. It has very heavy Victorian and Gothic influences and nowadays most of it is overgrown and home to a lot of wildlife including some muntjac deer. a very peaceful place.

This is the picture I am using for the 52 this week.

Rest in Peace.

Have included a few more to show how it is overgrown and the ornateness of the Victorians and their tombstones!

I think out of all of these, I prefer the second one to be honest. Good range of tones, nice contrast, and some good detail in the blades of grass in the foot of the pic.

I love graveyard sculpture, and it often leaves me wondering what the ivy is covering... Is it a baddie's grave?

Nice inspired idea on the theme too. I shouldn't have looked early.

Ian.

Damn! I scrolled down too far. Nice and early with the entry Lynton. I agree with Ian - I prefer the second shot, not there's anything wrong with the first though.

I agree too, soz.
The second shot has more to look at, especially who it was, when they left this earth, and any messages. We're nosing beings we like the small details the first is sadly missing them.

Although I must add the Celtic cross is close too, like the design and look of it.

I like the second and third images best out of the set. Great carving on the celtic cross and the photo picks it out really well.

For me if I have to pick one it wuld be the second shot althought it does look a bit busy for me  maybe it is because I do not like black and white photos, and I wish I knew why I don't like them:thinking: but I dont, if that does not sound daft

nope doesn't sound daft and I have a bit of a theory on this......... (as in a drunken discussion in a pub theory)

[talk cojones] I think if you have a scientific mind (as opposed to an arty one) you tend to rely on data and fact, as opposed to feeling / emotion, and things are pretty much binary, ie, on or off, yes and no, greater than or less than, black or white. [/talk cojones]

I will agree though that B&W only works in some instances.........

A member on here has a very interesting tagline / signature, something to do along the lines of "to see in colour is x, but to see in B&W is y".....

A good set for this weeks Peace.
I personally prefer #3 but I'd be happy with any of this shots.
If you have it I'd love to see #2 in colour

Lynton, this is a really good set. I never do B&W, don't know why. I never even think about it, but these images are very appropriate in B&W.

I prefer 2 and 3, although I agree with Nicki that 2 is a bit busy.

Very appropriate for the theme and it seems the sort of place where you can get some really intriguing shots.

Jenny

Nice set of shots, l think for me it has to be the first or second, the second is a very busy image and 'im undecided if this helps as it makes me look round the picture more or hinders. Although the lighter contrasting stones definitely take my eye into the image so that works pretty well.

OK I'm just going to throw my toys out of the pram . . .

I love Gothic / Victorian cemeteries and there's a great one near me. I've been waiting for a theme to go and shoot there since I made a hash of it in week 3 . . . and all weekend it's just pee'd down with rain :dummy:

I really like all of these Lynton - but no.3 is just edging it for me. The detail of the engravings in that cross is amazing. Looks like it's withstood the years pretty well too.
The PP is good too. HDR always looks better to me in B&W for some reason and you've kept it subtle so that it actually enhances the image.

I know you don't like borders, but for me this is just crying out for a simple black border around it to finish it off

Darren,

As you asked so nicely...:)

gravestonecolour.jpg

This is a jpeg of the RAW just before I started to mess with B&W. Colour or B&W?

Jenny,

B&W can be a bit hit and miss I think, but for this subject I thought really hit the theme. Personally I prefer the B&W of the "busy" picture compared to the colour, however others may prefer full colour. Definately something worth playing with either in camera (if you have that option - i don't!), or in Image Editing afterwards.

Chris,

Bit of a paradox isn't it. Busy but peaceful at the same time  oops I am getting all arty-farty! I chose the first one as it has clean cut lines and as a photo is "simple" and to me the single grave means more of a (Rest in) Peace....

Sarah,

Thanks for dropping by again. ALways a good idea or two from you but you and your bloody borders!!! :nono::lol::lol::lol:

As your comments have been so nice and helpful these past 17 weeks in my 52 than this is just for you, and if the border is the "wrong shade of black" tough!! (and to any QI watchers out there, I *know* that strictly speaking white and black are not coluors and therefore cannot have shades!)

graveborder.jpg

Actually, that does work doesn't it. :bonk:

Maybe I should recant my anti borderism! (unless they are not of equal dimensions, in which case I fully reserve my right to :dummy:)

That's a good set of photos, Lynton. :) Some impressive headstones there, and I always wonder if the families could really afford such ornate memorials, or whether they were done for 'show'.

I like the colour version, just as much as the b&w - some shots work either way, and I'm so glad you put a border round #3 because it works!!!

Jean

The 'Sarah' version of the Celtic cross gets my vote Lynton.
I like the contarst you have in the image. I also like the composition, I'd usually say it would need to be less central, more over to either side but this works just fine as it is. All round good set of images for this weeks theme.
Iain

Afternoon All,

Well after a bit of toy throwing last night and this morning went out with the better half for the day.

Had a text mid morning from Slimbert to tell me that Briony had picked one this week due to nothing having been picked - (Turns out Simon was too busy getting loved up!!:lol::wave:) and we were up at Pensthorpe being accosted by ducks and geese.

A hand full of Wheat Grain and I had my model for "close" (The "unofficial" thread this week)

closeupduck.jpg

Close up of a mum of 4, which involved having to lay on wet grass!

Real 52 theme will be up later this week...........

Blimey mate you are on the ball, shame someone else is not :naughty:

Ha ha. Well a phone that does interwebs and a mate who keeps me updated with 52 subjects helps.

Lynton, the cross works for me very well, as does the second... I think I prefer the cross though.

As for close... that really is close... well done

In the absence of a black light box, had to make do with a black sheet, gorillapod and 25 secs at f 13.

Maybe I should have dusted the bottle...... then a bit of photoshopping to get rid of the greys!

Love the duck she is certainly very close!

Indulgence .. great colours, dusty bottle .. just out of the cellar?!

Close. BRILLIANT! Did you have to kill and stuff the duck to get it that close and still? No, don't tell me! Bloody great anyway, fella.

@Just looking......... yeah have a rather extensive wine/whisky cellar (well shed and cupboard!) - really should have cleaned the bottle shouldn't I, and it now annoys me to the point that it will be redone prior to this 52 finishing.

I'm ok with the normal run of the mill Bells stuff though as the bottle isn't around long enough to gather dust.

@23rd Man........... cheers Dean. Very close, so much so that the Autofocus was having trouble on the Sigma 17-70.... dunno what minimum distance is on that lens but it was having trouble, lying on the grass... bribed by a handfull of feed and wheat kernals........ ;)

One of the good things about Pensthorpe is that all the waterfowl are free to come and go as they please, but most are pretty "tame" / human friendly, so can get up close...... I was hand feeding her couple of day old ducklings just prior to that and was amazed that she was quite happy to allow that.....
