Lynton's 52 for 2010 - Week 29 "Grace"

It's a street but there's nothing much of interest to pull me into it I'm afraid. Sorry.

I can see the grittiness that you were going for in this one . . . but slightly spoilt by the shiny new Audi parked on the RHS.
Personally, I'd also like a stronger focal point to it - maybe making a bit more of those trainers on the power line
TBH though street photography really isn't my thing, so feel free to completely ignore me  ;)

as for the trainers over the power line its suppose to represent a warning ie gangs(chavs) warning you are in their territory :cuckoo:

have a sense of satisfaction of knowing what the trainers thing is.

Not completely convinced by the gang thing. I remember seeing trainers slung across power lines 30 years ago.
Always took it as a bit of nonsense from bored teenagers :cuckoo:

 Not that I'm really up to speed on the whole chav scene . . . so it could be right.
The gang territory theory just sounds more like an urban myth to me though

I like it, the scene works well... It does seem a little dark on my lappy though (might be my lappy of couse ;))

Hi Lynton - trying to catch up on some of the threads I keep missing. :)

Week 1: I love #2 - great detail and really shouts Curved.

Week 2: This is a great representation of the poem, despite the issues already discussed here. It really does feel like that when you're flying (I've only done a little bit, but it was brilliant - apart from landing)

Week 3: A biltong chopper - who'd have thought such a thing existed. :D I cn imagine it's an acquired tast - and I can help wondering how/why you've acquired it - it always looks tough and chewy to me. :D Good shot, though, with lots of texture and detail.

Week 4: Yes, I think this looks quite gritty and 'streety', although it's a little dark on my monitor. I shall definitely watch out for trainers on power lines, though. :)

Jean

OK week 5 here we come..... as soon as it was announced I thought of this idea - after a few weeks back taking some snow shots on a level crossing, the alarms went off and the barriers came down and a train thundered through...........

C&C Welcome

Tracer - many thanks. Yes a very interesting street though a bit quiet that day. Seems the weirdo's of Norwich like to hang out down there, but were all hiding that day!

DLH - fair enough appreciate not to everyones taste.

Sarah - thanks. Yeah the audi was a bit posh. Street isn't my thing either.

John/JGS - yeah might have overdone the contrast a bit. I find if i look down on the monitor it appears lighter, and looking up it appears darker.

Jean - thanks for comments on all pictures? I acquired it in a Biltong shop in Franschoek, South Africa at a cost of £180 Rand. About £11 then. The purpose to chop Biltong. I make it. It's lovely! Much better than beef jerky!

Nice shot but why do all these shots of moving vehicles make me feel :puke:
LOL ?

Briony / Toby,

Many thanks for comments - did feel a bit on an anorak standing by a level crossing with a camera - photographing a train......

So my cunning plan was to park in farmers gateway, wait until the barriers were down, wait some more, take pics and then leg it before anyone really noticed me!

Hi Lynton, I like the train shot. Very on theme. However, it would be nice to get a better location without those bigs tanks behind the train. They tend to take the eye off the train itself. I know it is probably not easy to get a nice scenic level crossing!

Jenny

very nice
a lower level might have hidden the tanks a bit and given even more impression of speed
getting closer to the track would as well but that tends to be life-limiting!
maybe a slightly slower shutter speed would work too?

Jenny / Mike,

Thanks both for your comments.

Jenny - yes there are nicer railway crossings, for sure, and the one I originally planned to go to - Tivetshall - I abandoned due to the high abundance of "Network Rail" people working on the line - and them thinking I was a trainspotter (not that theres anything rong with spotting trains - if that floats your boat!) - just something I personally feel uncomfortasble being associated with. :) From using the trains, I know they leave on the hour and are in that area about 15-18 minutes past the hour - so time was short as I had no desire to loiter round railway crossings with cameras!

Maybe it would have worked better on the other side of the crossing - so the grain silo's were not in it. Maybe I'll give it a go sometime if in the vicinity and within 2 mins of a train due!!!

Mike,

Agree - and it would be feasible there to go the other side of the barrier (so in front of the fence I stood behind and crouch down - thereby being trackside - but safe - and invisible to the general public..... hey theres a plan hatching here - could even set up the tripod low down and closer to the track and hide further away with a IR remote.............hmmmmm I am sure it breaks a few railway rules and bylaws......... but it might just work..........

Well that's certainly shifting !!

I'm going to disagree with what's been said about the location and the background, I think it all fits nicely, our railways do not all meader through rolling hills and countryside.

It's a great shot. The only thing I would like to have seen was a fraction more space on the left of the frame so as not to appear as if you are cutting a bit off the front of the locomotive.

Thought I would get mine in early this week - as busier towards the end of the week.

I interpreted Present as an adjective and immediately thought of being back at school and the Register being taken.

So I knocked up a "Register" in Excel - and filled it in and took this:

springbokregisterbw800.jpg

Intention was to focus on the registration ticks for today, and everythign else blurred due to Aperture and low DOF........

As always C&C most welcome............... Might have another go later.

Thats brilliant. I think the DOF works quite well.

Well done Lynton! Keeping with the school theme, go to the top of the class for being the first to submit their entry for this weeks theme.

I like the thought behind your image.
I like the image too, especially the dof and composition.

Iain

Scarecrow - was going too fast for me to get it all in! Honest!

PeterT, Iain and Ricky - thanks for the comments............ was first thing that came into my head.......

Well done great picture and good idea  you can rest up now until the next theme unlike the rest of us.

Week 6 is my favourite of your 52 so far........great idea, and nicely taken photo! B+W suits it very well, gives it a lovely nostalgic feel

immediately thought of being back at school and the Register being taken

Me too! I wondered if it was a bit obscure for some people as I'm sure kids probably just say 'here' now, rather than 'present'. Glad I looked at this though, as you've done a cracking job. As already said... nice pic, nice excel skills, and nice take on the theme.

Still scratching my grey matter here for something 'different'.

Very cleverly put together and very nicely shot too Lynton, gets my tick.

Great interpretation and a cleverly exectued picture.
Certainly 'registers' with me. Well done! :-)

 You really were early this week weren't you?

Brilliant idea for the theme, and nicely executed too. It might have been nice to see a bit of colour in it - I seem to remember the school registers being in blue and red ink, but the B&W definitely works well.

Good shot for speed too. I missed this first time round.

Speed - I don't mind the grain silos as I quite like urban grit sometimes for a change. A pity there is not a little more room on the left but you have got a good impression of speed even though a little more blur would be even better.

Present - good interpretation and a nice tidy execution.

Lynton, both speed and present are good and work well, fitting the themes nicely

struggling a bit this week, not with the subject but crap weather and lack of time, today tomorrow or sunday, so this weeks picture is from a friends daughter's christing taken a few weeks back.

erinbob800square-3.jpg

I think this fits the subject nicely - people in it. What I like about it is the baby is focused 100% on the camera, and grandad Bob is focused 100% on her and oblivious to the camera. This one got printed and framed and given to Grandad as a present. He loves it and it's on the wall.

Should I get time / weather behaves itself , I'll add a second picture for this week.

haha , love the expression on the baby's face and how its so transfixed on the camera.

im assuming the black BG was done in post processing, if so great job on that, the only thing im not too sure about is the colours, but thats just me, and i couldn't suggest of the top of my head how to improve them so good job :)

What a fantastic photograph Lynton.
I'm sure Grandad is chuffed to bits with it:D
It fits the theme to a 'T'.
I would be really pleased if this were mine and wouldn't change a thing. Well done:thumbs:

Thanks all for your comments on Week 6.

Richard - yep quite a bit of playing around with this one - but just for her expression, I thought it was worth it!

Iain - many thanks. Yeah he was chuffed.

This is the original - was taken in a village hall with lots of people in the background - so they had to go!

It's certainly a lovely photo. Baby looks a little dark, especially the eyes, but the look on her face is priceless. Fantastic job in PP to black out the background. Someone would have to look very closely to tell.

Well - said to Damien I would get this one done today - forgot about it until lost all the natural light - so this is on the 50mm macro lens f2.8 handheld (as tripod in the car, and it's chucking it down.)

watch.jpg

Being honest - I like the "mechanical" take on it as the watch is an auto winding fully mechanical one - no batteries involved. It's also see through in places. As soon as I saw "mechanical" I knew what I was going to do.

Not sure if the very shallow DoF works though - may have another go sometime this week with natural light, tripod and something like f8 - f11.

C&C most welcome.... I'm off to find a cardboard box, tracing paper and black paper and build me a home made lightbox!

The image from last week is stunning, one of the best I've seen on here. Absolutely love it. It's even better when you realise that you spotted the potential in the original.

Take a bow, pat on the back, extra cookie before bed and all that, I am one impressed person.

I didn't even know what this weeks them was until I stumbled on your thread, now wishing I hadn't as it's the kinda idea I'd have come up with. Curses. Now need another idea. Nicely done :D

You're right, a tripod and f8 are what's needed for week 8, stop being a lazy git and get it done proper!!

Really like week 7, very good use of PP on that one....
