Lunar eclipse tomorrow night

Yeah all my latest shots have come out blurry. I've had to up the ISO to 1600 just to get a reasonable shutter speed but it's still not sharp.

Of course it could be the drambuie :) (it's cold out there after all!)
 
I have focusing problems unless its dead centre, which is a pain since the moon can shift pretty fast at high focal lengths

10s f/6.3 ISO200 right now. I refuse to use higher ISOs on this camera :/
 
Its officially not HDR'able :D Silly lack of dynamic range.

Well I've had a dabble. Just downloading the images now, but from the previews, it seems my tripod head was slipping a bit (Manfrotto 390RC2), so I removed the battery grip (in the dark, reattaching the battery flap too :p), and did it that way.

Took a few on bulb setting, roundabout 20-30 seconds or so at f11, ISO100, and one of them I ended up with what I like to call a moonpipe :D

It starts with a moon, ends witha moon at the other end, and they are joined by a 'pipe 'o' moons' in the middle :D

I find anything above 2 seconds, the moon will actually move! :p

Am finding it difficult to get a good focus on it. :( Or it softness of my lens?

Went up to the top of Wrotham Hill (just along from Brands Hatch main entrance) and set up the camera to avoid any light pollution from the city and came back with these

Two things have become apparent. My tripod sucks for stability and I need a bigger lens.

Anyway here's a couple of crops

f/5.6, 1.6s, ISO800 - is this as best as I can get?

Here's my attempt! taken at 1600iso (maybe a little too high in hindsight) and a F/L of 200. (MUST buy longer lenses! :( )

I think the problems were difficulty in focusing - it was a really dim image in the viewfinder. Also exposure normally is around 1/100 - 1/125 at f8. You can see slight star movement in my shot even at 1.6 secs which was as fast as I could get at 800 ISO, so you have to assume the moon has moved also in that period which is taking the edge off the sharpness of everyone's shots. :shrug:

here's mine - got some god aweful shake in my tripod at 400mm after about 1sec so this is at 0.8s, f/5.6, 100iso

I have the 500mm (not the 600mm) and I used it with the 1.4 TC so effectively 700mm. :)

Looking at everyone's shots I'm sure that no-one was getting a fast enough shutter speed to produce a sharp image. High ISOs aren't helping either.
 
I'm glad that this thread has got some people out there shooting the eclipse. I caught the tail end of it and thought it looked pretty cool, probably helped by the wine!

Didn't bother trying to shoot it as we had fiends over for dinner (and my longest lens is 85mm! :p)
