Lumix S5

S5 also has some useful features for macro photography like focus bracketing which Sony doesn't have. This is really the weakness of Sonys, they lack useful features and tools for photographers.

Back when I had a Sony a7RII you could add/buy apps directly on the camera to do some really clever things. Weirdly they abandoned that and never replaced the popular features that came out of that.

The S5 has stacking, high res mode, live composite (which I adore).

yeah the play memories system. I still own a few apps I purchased on it. My favourite was the smooth reflections.
The only one they (eventually) replaced was the time lapse but the app in play memories was actually better than the version you get in camera 3rd gen onwards.

All in all not dealt with nicely and annoys me how much Sony bodies are lacking in terms of these features. If it weren't for the lenses would have swapped to canon.

BTW, if you do decide on the S5 Sigma do a EF-L mount adapter much like they do for my Sony which works very well (on the Sony anyway)
I'm not too worried as I only have two half decent lenses for the efs/EF and that's the EF 50 mm 1.8 and the Sigma 105 macro lens (not the art one).

I took my m50 mk ii to the stratford butterfly farm earlier. Got some nice pics (nice for me) but trying to shoot macro, handheld in there with people bumping into you wasn't ideal.

I also have some questions. Are the adapters good enough for basic landscape and how about godox system triggers? S1 or s1r are getting cheap and come with better evf than new Sony a7iv and better size ... And then the dust question?
I could in fact do with a used R6 for much more sensible money. Like z6ii is on HK sites

I haven't used any adaptors but having read up extensively on them, they are absolutely fine for AF-S (not so much for AF-C). I had planned to buy the EF adaptor to get something like the Canon 17-40 as an affordable wide angle, but I'm perfectly happy with the Panasonic 20-60mm so haven't taken the plunge.

Well I took the plunge and I've picked up a Lumix S5 with the 20-60 mm, spare battery, grip, mic and some super memory card that was labeled at £95? Must be one of these fast ones. £1599 all in with 3 year warranty.

I've been playing around with it for the last hour and thus far I think it's really nice. Following my imperial Shi Tzu around and it hasn't struggled for detection, etc. I've not tried video (it will probably never see video mode accessed).

I though I would take a punt and see how I get on.

I will buy two more lenses the 50 mm and a macro. That will be me sorted then.

Thanks for your input folks.

Enjoy the new camera - don't forget to post some pics when you take them.

Amazon have a used adapter for less than £60 in their warehouse deals ... try it on your Sigma macro and if it is no good then return it.

Got to be worth a try, could save you buying a new lens ... it's not like you need AF speed for macro anyway.

See you in the L Mount owners thread :)

I am sure you will be very pleased with it. Happy shooting. My Canon 6D cost £1400 body only in 2014 but I don’t regret it even though I don’t like some aspects of it.

It appears that adapter doesn't cover the 105 macro as I've pulled the list of supported lenses from various websites (below from WEX)

It's okay though as I'm keeping my M50 mk ii (used it today and on the weekend) so the current lens won't go to waste.

It also means I have a genuine excuse to buy another macro lens and I was looking at the laowa 100mm f2.8 2x ultra macro which seems to have good reviews and write ups.

It's still possible it will work, The Sigma adapter I use for my Canon lenses on the Sony a9 doesn't list a few of the ones I have yet they work fine.

Saying that, the laowa 2x looks to be an excellent lens, I have been thinking about one for my Pentax system ... you may want to look into some sort of decent lighting if you are going to get serious about macro though.

I've got a speedlite ex430 iii RT for the M50 mk ii (which is massive compared to the camera) and watched a few YouTube videos on macro lighting. Might have to grab a flash for the S5 but will enquire about godox systems this time lol.

I'm probably only buying two lenses for the S5 a macro and either a 50 mm or an 85 mm. The 20-60 mm kit lens seems to be really good, so that will be my walk about one.

My wife / daughter will have my M50 mk ii kit for use when we are out and about, so there are some longer reach lenses I can use on that if needed. So I won't bother buying a longer reach lens for the S5 as it stands.

I had a love hate relationship with that lens....
Love:
Beautiful optics, sharp across range from infinity to 2x. Plus it held up really well at macro distances even with a 2x TC. So you could get 4x magnification without buying a dedicated lens.

Hate:
The focus throw on the lens is infuriating small and seems to be a very bad design oversight especially for a lens that goes all the way from infinity to 2x.
I have old ninfy fifties from film era with a longer focus throw.
