Silly question time but is there any harm in lubricating patterson reels (the ballbearing especially) with a pencil? I ran an HB round the bearing and reel for my last roll of 120 and it slipped in beautifully. I couldn't see anything wrong with it but anyone know if it could have an effect?

Other than it may contaminate your chemicals I dont see the harm. Never needed to when I used them for a living though.

London water is very hard so the balls can get a little gummed up. Then again it could be my terrible loading technique!

Jim, it was standard advice from our Lecturer back at Uni.
Just don't put too much on ! As in only when necessary.

Oh I've recently realised this aswell! It does effect the ball bearings. Did the HB pencil make any noticeable effect with the chemicals when you used it with the 120 film? I'm curious :)

Done it 3 times now. No differences to development etc but the films load a lot easier. Just rub it a little over the bearings and it makes all the difference!
