LR6 Update 6.2.....Problems..?

Tentatively tried it on my Macbook Air running El Capitan, whilst fully expecting problems. So far so good, although the new Import screen looks like it came from the crayons of the Win8 designer.

I'll still hold off putting it on my main machine, also running El C, until I get more reassurance.

I took the chance and installed it (I run windows 10). Installation was trouble free but it froze when I opened the new import screen. This can be prevented by switching this off as described in the link in the first post.

Other than that so far so good although to be honest I also can see little difference.

I updated on a Mac before reading all this - multiple crashes at first but as advised in the links unchecking the Show "Add Photos" Screen in the General Preferences dialog stopped the crashes.

So far I've not experienced anything untoward at all. (MacOS 10.10.5)

I updated as soon as the notification popped up. I'm normally reasonably cautious but I've never had a problem with a LR +0.1 update and the changes appeared to be minimal.

Adobe certainly downplayed the import changes. They described it as "The import experience has been updated", not 'we've dumbed it down by default and removed some really useful functions'. I'm all for offering a simplified interface for those new to the app, but completely removing features used by more experienced users is crazy. (A touch of Apple's arrogance there I feel.)

Luckily, the only affect the changes have had for me (I use Photo Mechanic for culling etc.) is a much smaller box for entering keywords on import. But it does make me concerned for the future; if this is how they've 'improved' the Import module, I dread to think what they may do to the Develop module.

I forgot to say...

One good thing about the update is making 'Dehaze' available with the Adjustment Brush, Graduated and Radial filters; which will please many people.

Having been a tester for Adobe in the past I never install any updates when they first come out, I always wait to see what problems they've managed to intoduce this time. My advice wait a week or two untill they figure out how to get ot to work properly. I use PS and LR for my business, I don't want it down or crashing.

Nothing wrong with 6. But if it is sluggish it's usually because you gave hardware acceleration enabled, but your card isn't up to scratch. Turing off the hardware option usually sorts it out.

Did the update last night, but hadn't noticed that, so cheers for pointing it out as i find the Dehaze tool rather useful :)

New lightroom update available which now, hopefully, fixes the current issues.

It's supposed to fix most of the problems, but some users in one of the Adobe forums are saying the Wacom pen is slow when dragging sliders and others are still saying it crashes. Also many people, including myself, are disappointed that Adobe removed features from the import process like the import destination preview, move, filename previews etc. Hopefully Adobe will consider bringing back these features to the new Import dialog.

Adobe seems very confused about what are bug-fixes (eg the improved merge engine) which all users get, and what are new features ( like the dehaze tool) which only CC subscribers get.

What exactly is the new import process? An update or a bug-fix? Did anybody really want this? It's just bewildering.

It seems they are pandering to the perceived requirements of potential new users whilst forgetting the thousands (millions?) of current users.

Essentially they've removed some of the options to make the process on importing easier for new users, sadly it's removed some features long term uses use. Why exactly they remove features from mature programs (they've removed or changed stuff in PS too) is slightly worrying, how far will they go in "dumbing" down the programs. Lets face it LR wasn't over complicated to start with.

Not to start with, it wasn't! But over the years it has become more and more complex. You have to wonder how new potential users will cope with the rest of the features if they (allegedly) found the import process difficult.

I agree with you. Where else will it be dumbed down for the selfie generation.

What was the rush?
They needed new stuff to announce at their Adobe Max conference. Without the redesigned Import tool all they had to announce for LR was Dehaze and bug fixes.

One positive thing has come out of this debacle for me, I've learnt about some additional resources of information.

I agree watched a few Youtube videos by Julieanne Kost but not seen this page until posted on TP http://www.jkost.com/lightroom.html

The update to the update seems (touch wood) to have fixed the crashes I was getting. It's not returned the Import page to its former excellent self from the new Fisher-Price version. I can use it, yes, but it's not as convenient.

Is there any news on Adobes intention of adding back the missing features? I will miss a few of them. (preview of filename, preview of folder structure, filtering by destination folder, eject card after import, and the 'move' function.)

That's a bit like asking - could Adobe admit that they were wrong?

They have. Admitted they were wrong, that is. Hopefully they will reinstate the old-fashioned import structure.

I understand they have admitted they were wrong in rolling out a buggy update, but have they said they were wrong in the import dialogue changes?

No, they were somewhat defensive on this matter. But when was the last time any software company got it wrong, admitted it, then changed it back to what their customers wanted?

If you’re an advanced user, you will need to be aware of some Import features that are no longer available. They are:

  • Move is gone. You can only Add the photos at their existing location or Copy the photos to a new location.
  • Eject After Import is gone. You must now remember to eject memory cards using the operating system (although this will hopefully return in a future update).
  • Duplicate photos can’t be imported (without workarounds).
  • Zoom is gone from the Import Loupe view.
  • Filename is now hidden under a tooltip.
  • Destination panel folders preview is gone, including the italic preview showing your chosen folder structure, the checkmarks to their right, and the volume information showing how much space was available on each drive.
  • Thumbnail filtering by Destination folder is gone.
  • Total file size is gone from the bottom left corner.
  • The filename preview (when renaming) is gone.

  • So it's a downgrade then. I'll stick with 6.1.1 then I think.
