currently running LR5 on an external 2tb Iomega which is connected via firewire 800 into my 2011 iMac. Another external is used as a time machine back up for the Iomega.

I want to change this set up next year to something that runs a bit quicker, or to maybe change the way it runs (i.e. a raid / ssd) set up etc

The idea is that I want to keep all the main dng images off the main computer to keep it running smoothly, but is there a way of maybe having the LR catalogue running on the main computer with the images all being kept separate on the external?

Sorry if it's a daft question but not that up to speed on these things so any advice on what works for you would be great thanks!

You can keep your images, anywhere, just as long as LR knows where they are. If you move them, LR will not be able to see them (which it will indicate with a ! sign), you then just need to update LR with the location.

You can also keep your LR catalog in any location you desire. Would also strongly advise that you ensure that you backup your catalog to a separate location.

if you want faster then best bet would probably be have your catalogue and working files on SSD. when finished move the files in LR to your larger storage (which obviously you should already be backing up to a separate drive, back up the RAW however you like and use the built in catalogue backup in LR obviously back this up too).

thanks guys for the help. so am i right in thinking that if the main catalogue is kept on my main internal drive LR would run faster than if it was on the external? thanks!

I think my setup works quite well.

OS on an ssd, which holds the main software, LR, Photoshop, etc. Another SSD is then used to store the LR catalog and image previews (also used as PS scratch disk). Raw files are saved to external (usb3.0) drive (which I backup to a NAS drive).

LR catalog is also backup up (on another internal drive, but could be kept on external drive).
