I'd thought that this was a quick way of reverting the shot back to how it was at import but apparently not unless I am being thick

So what does it do & I have looked in help Pdf but am none the wiser?

"Lightroom provides several ways to undo, or reset, adjustments you make to photos as you’re working in the Develop module.

Save a snapshot or preset of your settings before undoing them so that you don’t completely lose the settings.
To undo adjustments in the Develop module, do any of the following:

Click the Reset button to revert back to the Lightroom default settings.
Click the General - Zeroed preset in the Presets panel to remove all settings completely.
Select an earlier version in the History panel or Snapshots panel that occurred before you applied the settings.
Double-click individual slider controls to reset the sliders to zero.
Choose Undo from the Edit menu. Lightroom tracks each setting you make. You can undo all of them by choosing Undo multiple times."

Thanks for your help & time Shaun

It's weird as it does as I thought most of the time then goes 'funny' & does get almost back to original but not quite. It can look as though it does but when you press the 'y' key you can see a few things not back to where they should be.

I will keep digging & try making my own 'zeroed' preset.

PS Not seen you on the PP game recently

Another option is in the Develop module click on history and it shows all changes made.
Just click on the import date entry to get back to how it was imported into LR4

That's what I've been doing but finding it a drag to keep scrolling to it down that particular panel. So was trying to get my own user preset so a one click 'back to original'. I guess I must be getting lazy trying to cut down the number of steps. I keep trying different pre-sets on many images & want to quickly revert back then try another preset.

Mmm  I wonder if I may find nay clues in the LR shortcuts Pdf I think I downloaded.

Remember that zero is resetting to 0, you blank copy will have you import settings applied..does that account for the difference?

And yeah been missing the pp game, been busy working on a new website, taken up a lot of time, hoping things should get back to normal in next cple of weeks :)

Ctrl Z for the keyboard shortcut to undo the last change, then the change before that etc

Or you've reset buttons - the ones on the crop panel just resets the crop settings

Thank you all for helping. I think I'd been fiddling too much with the settings & so I set things back to default & all is how I feel it should be - with zeroing working. Perhaps I should stop fiddling but it gives me something to do
