LR4 - What can I be doing wrong?

Right, this might seem very simple, but its driving me absolutely crazy!

I have imported about 1200 images into LR4. From there, I have selected 314 images and assigned 1 star to them. I have then worked on them in colour. That far, simple.

Now I need to make a duplicate BW version of all 314 images. So I have selected them all and made virtual copies. To the virtual copies I have assigned 2 stars so that I can filter out my soon to be BW versions.

When I filter by "equal to" 1 star I get 314 images. Great. When I filter by "equal to" 2 stars, I get 310!

I have tried filtering by "is greater than or equal to" 1 star, and I get 624!

I have clicked through all 624 images, checking that every other image has 2 stars assigned. I can't find anything wrong.

What could I possibly be doing wrong?
 
314 and 314 is 628 so you must have missed 4 of your 2 star lot.
 
OK, so I've deleted the 2 star selection and started again. Now its telling me my 1 star selection is 313!

However... from the 1 star selection I have now made a new set of virtual copies and assigned them 2 stars. Now its showing 1 star = 313 and 2 star as 313.

Sort of progress.... At least they are equal.
