Hi all,

anybody find LR4 slow? I'm using a 2009 macbook pro, 2.8 intel core 2 duo with 4gb ram.

Lightroom takes approx 30s to open fully, hangs when opening another module for the first time, and browsing in the develop module takes up to 10-15s when changing pictures for the "loading" display to disappear.

Any tips on how to improve speed?

Whatever hardware you have, it only takes a couple of years for the software developers to slow it all down. Have a look through this page: http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/400/kb400808.html

It's a little slower for me I think than LR3 but I do have an overclocked i7-2600K, 16G memory and a separate scratch disk so moving between modules is ~ 1second..

going to have a look at extra ram and maybe an ssd drive. see if i can eke out another couple of years out of this machine. had it less than 3 years...

Mine seemed a bit slow when using the filters on thousands of images, especially when updating metadata, but after restarting my mac it seemed a lot faster yesterday.

I currently have 6Gb RAM, Q6600 processor and Lr installed on an SSD and the catalogue on a different SSD - Unbearably slow!

I have a new mobo and CPU to install but it should be able to run well with what I currently use!

I have Lr4 on an SSD and catalogue on a 2nd SSD and it was painfully slow.

Updated my Graphics Drivers and hey voila! Fairly quick again!! Try that.

Still not as fast as Lr3 but fast enough to be usable.

4.1 has just been released

There have been comments regarding the speed of LR4 ever since the first Beta came out. It has improved, but probably the main reason is that it is doing a lot more work in the background.

There have been several comments on other web sites as to how the Process 2012 develop module works, and basically it's doing a lot more work, hence the slow down.

As already said theres been a lot is "speed issues" with LR4 (and some with early LR3) some reports seem to suggest screen size/graphics may be a factor but the trouble is it seems to vary a lot from machine to machine. I have seen people with 32 gig of ram on a quad core struggling while someone else with 4gig on a dual core runs fine, as said 2012 process is more memory intensive though.

Mine isn't too bad, on a low spec (i3-2200, 4gb RAM, Radeon 6450) Dell. I have around 12k photos in the catalogue, and all from this year are RAW and DNG.

Just before 4.1 was issued out I updated my graphics drivers and that made a MASSIVE difference so I'd recommend you do that too.

Cheers
Jim

I've found 4.1 to run a bit smoother than 4.0
