I'm running LR3 (3.2) on my desktop , which is fairly powerful (Intel Q6600 Quad core @ 2.4 GHz, 4Gb ram, Win 7 64-bit, Radeon 4850 1Gb, dual monitors) with all main drivers & patches up to date.

Using the 'Library' module LR3 runs fine with ram usage low at around 250-500Mb & CPU at 1-5%.

Trouble starts when I start using the 'Develop' module. It virtually brings the computer down on it's knees - with ram usage consistently increasing to about 2-2.5 Gb of ram, which brings total ram being used up to approx 85% when taking into consideration the other programs & services running in the background. CPU usage continues to run low though - between 1-5% when inactive in 'Develop' increasing to 25-35% when doing stuff.

I've tried the 32 bit version in case there was a memory leak, but if there is, it happens on this version too as ram usage is still around 1.5-2Gb mark.

I've noticed this mainly when working on some of the larger photos - these are generally RAW files (CR2) taken on a Canon 7D @ 18mp - approx 20-25mb in size. JPEG's tend to be much quicker and less resource hungry - trouble is I'm shooting in RAW, so not much help to me!!

Anyone else suffering or suffered from this and have any tips on how to improve performance? I regularly optimise my catalog (approx 13,500 images - 72 Gb) which doesn't really make any noticeable difference.

Would it help if I created individual catalogs for each year of photos, thereby reducing the number of photos as well as overall size of catalog?

I'm more than a little stumped!

thanks as always

Is the photo library on a local drive?

Is there plenty of space on the local drive?

Which OS and version?

Just 3 questions to start with

my desktop has a similar spec to yours and runs lightroom 3 very well

1. Yes - internal disk
2. Yes - 627Gb free on 1Tb HDD
3. Win 7 64 Bit running LR 3.2 32 & 64 bit versions

However, I do have my catalog sat in a different folder (on same HDD) to the default Adobe one - I've got it in a Dropbox folder under 'My Documents' - not an issue to move it to a different location if required

I'd read that about the 64 bit version, hence installing 32 bit version as well, but still having problems - unless it's a problem with running under Win 7 64 bit that's the problem

Running Lightroom 3 under windows 7 64 bit and all is fine...... 8GB RAM 1TB memory

so I can assume that Win 7 64 isn't the problem. what else could it be?

re-installing 3.2 didn't have any effect, so I doubt it's a corrupt installation

still stumped

I'm having the same issues (32bit) which I didn't have with LR2, it's taking several seconds just to open a pic in dev mode. Not impressed.

I don't have anything like the machine that you do but I find that if my Recycle Bin has much in it or the hard drive I run LR on has less than about 70Gb free memory (out of 250Gb I think) then it slows down considerably

I'd read about that too, so regularly empty my recycle bin - all things considered it should be running like a dream.

I've also posted a thread on the Adobe forums and there's a suggestion on there that the adjustment brush might be the culprit - I'm still exploring it though as it seems to not affect everyone!
