I use a mac and when i import the CR2 file from my hard drive into lightroom it's fine but if i go back into my hard drive and move that CR2 file into another folder then in lightroom it says the file is offline or missing, Presumably because i moved it. However i click on the photo to reimport to lightroom but it does not load back into it, So frustrating!!! help

when in the library module, highlight the folder where you file is NOW located, then right click the folder and you should have a 'find missing folder' option, click that then point it to where you are now as you catalogue still thinks it is in the old place.

Why not just move the file in lightroom? Just drag it or a number of files/directories and they move.

Does the catalogue move too...ie all the adjustments you made to the previous ones, in the method you choose?

Isn't that what I wrote in my 1st post?
No. Your post was about moving the file and then reattaching. Mine was about moving it within lightroom. No need to reattach or re find anything.

Yes, I believe the processing does move when you copy the file. Easy to test out though.

Where did I write to move the file...I said ask LR to find the file....and you point to it....go check my first post.

Personally I start from a diffrent angle

Why are you moving the files in the first instance ?

I download the files off the memory card into my preffered flie layout

Year/Month/Event

THEN import into LR (for me itls Aperture but same applies)

A same change in your workfolw would solve your problem

There are 2 methods of moving files in lightroom.

  • Move the file outside of lightroom, then when the question mark is there saying the file is offline you right click and find the file. This is the method you describe in your first post.
  • Move the file inside lightroom. In that case LR handles moving stuff around (including the processing settings). There is no need to reattach anything.

I think we're talking at cross purposes here if you re-read the posts.

I always move stuff with Lightroom just easier and less time consuming.

Wouldn't it make more sense to do something like;

Files from memory card to folder named with the date taken then that folder imported into LR.

Tis what I do and I've never needed a reason to move that folder after as it sits in my photo folder on a separate drive. I concur with what others are saying that you need to find a different route to take.

Files from CF to named folder "2011/portraits/surname-date/raw"

Then in LR3 right click on portraits and click synchronise. Import files.

Then I export ordered/web/viewing images to a folder "surname-date/web" for example. Or a print to surname-date/print/IMG7026_6x4.jpg

That's great when LR is linked to the image. But if, as the OP has, you move the file externally of LR it breaks the link, so you have to do the ALT+CLICK > FIND MISSING FOLDER action.
