LR3 Import problem

I've been having a problem with LR3 for a week or so, and it's become worse since yesterday evening.

Almost every time I try and Import the library module becomes unresponsive and LR3 crashes to a close. Since last evening I've been unable to import any new images even after fresh reboots of the system. I use the Import dialogue manually.

I've got about 20,000 images in the catalog which I don't believe should be a problem..

Potentially relevant system information..

Lightroom version: 3.0 [677000]
Operating system: Windows 7 Business Edition
Version: 6.1 [7600]
Application architecture: x86
System architecture: x86
Physical processor count: 2
Processor speed: 2.1 GHz
Built-in memory: 3582.1 MB
Real memory available to Lightroom: 716.8 MB
Real memory used by Lightroom: 173.5 MB (24.2%)
Virtual memory used by Lightroom: 164.1 MB
Memory cache size: 44.4 MB
System DPI setting: 96 DPI
Desktop composition enabled: Yes
Displays: 1) 1680x1050
Serial Number: <deleted>

Any ideas what the problem might be?

Your system hardware specs look similar to mine, and we're both running Windows 7, except I am on x64 rather than x86. Processor speed/cores are the same and memory is similar. However, you seem only to have 716MB available to LR3, compared to my system which makes all memory available, even with other apps running, so I don't know what is going on in your system with memory management....

I have had LR3 crash on me a couple of times, and the last time Windows automatically applied some adjustments to the way LR3 is run. Don't ask me what the adjustments were or how I find out.

What I would say is that switching into the import dialogue does seem to take rather a long time and progress can be quite tardy initially once you are there. Once LR3 catches up with itself then everything is fine, but compared to LR2 the operational speed of this part of the system is not impressive. It's probably something to do with LR3 hunting through a source folder to display thumbnails, which LR2 never did. I think my system is fairly lean and clean, booting to the desktop in 40 seconds, but the import stuff in LR runs like a slug. To switch to the Import screen from the Library Grid view takes 5 seconds and it is 13 seconds before it display a choice of import locations. If I have my phone attached, which has some JPEGs on it, then it is 20 seconds or more before there is any sign of useful life from the Import dialogue.

So unfortunately I can't help you, other than to say that you may need to be patient. I guess you should also take a look at why your OS is reserving a large chunk of memory that seems unavailable to LR3.

Oh, and I have no idea what "Desktop Composition = yes/no" means. Yours is "yes". Mine is "no".

EDIT : just did a quick search. Maybe there is something in this thread you could try - http://forums.adobe.com/message/2895680

It gets even weirder.

I've managed to import since posting the first message.. it seems the "magic ingredient" is that I have to have my mobile connected to the laptop (via bluetooth). The Import dialogue is defaulting to the phone onboard storage.

I've found one useful post on the memory allocation/management question. Looks like it's a 32-bit vs 64-bit matter that shouldn't cause any problems.

Thanks for the link.. but I'm crashing before I can even open the Import dialogue to select the files to import.

Done that a couple of times last night and again this morning. It hasn't made a difference. I've just moved quite a chunk of image files across onto an external drive (using Lightroom), so I'll try optimising again.

Re-optimised.. no difference.. if Import can't find the Nokia it's not a happy bunny.

Several years ago I seem to recall that Nokia communications suite caused a bit of a headache when it came to connecting and importing from digital cameras - something to do with tying up ports and causing conflicts somewhere. Assuming you have that running, or the modern day equivalent, what happens if you disable it?

Disabling Nokia doesn't seem to make a difference. But at least I can get around the problem for now until I find a complete solution.

Thanks for you help Tim.

If anyone else finds there way to this thread with a simiar problem.. it seems to have resolved itself. I'm guessing that a recent transfer of images from the camera using EOS Utilities managed to reset something because LR3 is now no longer waiting for the mating warble from the Nokia.
