Is there any way of setting up the auto import in LR1.4 so that it imports the photos from their current location rather than importing them into a new folder?

I like the way that I can structure the photos where I want them on the PC and manually import them from their current location into the catalogue but it would make my life easier if I could get the auto import working how I want to. At the minute I set up the scanner software to save into specific folders, I can manually import into LR from there and keep them there but it seems I can only set the auto import up so that it watches those folders, imports the photos and saves them to another location. The problem with this is that it duplicates the file so I have to then delete the original, I'm trying to save work not create more.

Any ideas?

From the import dialogue box, under FILE HANDLING click on the arrows to reveal a box. The top entry is Add Photo's to Catalog without moving

Unfortunately that option doesn't appear to be available in the Auto-Import settings.

Sorry Kev , thought it was the same with ver 1.4 as it is with 2.x. Unfortunately I'm on 2.6 so their may be some difference..

I've got a demo of 2.6 but that's the same as 1.4 chappers unless I'm looking at the wrong bit or unless there has been a change between 2.4-2.6 which includes the auto import settings.

If I go to File>Auto Import>Auto Import Settings under the heading "Destination" I have to pick a folder to put it in to. If I select the same folder as the one I'm watching it creates a duplicate file. I can't fund an option to import from its current location.

OK I think I now understand. When in library mode click on the import button. You will get the import module come up. Top left you'll see a box labelled FILE HANDLING. Click on the up/down arrows to the right of the dialogue box. The box should expand to show the option to import the images but leave them in the current location. Select this.

However I suspect the option to leave the images in it's current location may be disabled in Auto Import as you are normally importing images from a card. To import from a current location you need to do a "Manual" import

Sorry to sound a bit vague but it's been nearly a year since I used version 1.4.

Auto import is more for shooting tethered really, so anything in the folder gets imported, if the file stays in the watch folder you could get into some interesting software loop.

My suggestion would be to have one watched folder that you scan to, then change the destination folder from within Lightroom when you activate auto import.

Brilliant Lewis, the opposite of what I want to do but doesn't create any extra work and gets things nicely organised. Still have to delete the duplicates but they'll all be in one folder. Simples:thumbs:

No worries!

I thought you can set the auto import to move, rather than copy, so there shouldn't be any duplicates left over.

No, that's the problem with auto import. You have the option of which folder to monitor and the option of which folder to dump the imported photos in to. If you dump them into the same folder or if you dump them into know folders you end up with duplicates but at least with your suggestion I'll have one folder where I can delete the duplicates from.

Ahh, I was basing it on LR2 which moves the images from the watched folder to the destination, rather than copying, I thought LR1.4 would be the same.

When I shoot tethered I shoot to pictures/capture and the files are moved to pictures/year/date with no duplicates.
