Hi - just got my new Canon 5D mk2 and having issues importing to LR 4.

LR 3 sees them straight away, provides the previews and imports, no trouble. LR 4 sees the camera, provides a few previews, but has several greyed out areas, saying 'no previews available' and when I press import nothing happens, apart from a message saying there are no images to import.

Any help gratefully received as I'm keen to stick with LR 4.

Thank you - Graeme.

No - just connecting the 5D straight to LR4 via USB.

I've had this a couple of times with my MK3, and a card reader. Not sure why, but on import Lightroom generated it's own preview thumbnails, and all the images are there. Now this did happen with a large number of images downloading , and I did scroll through fairly quickly, so I wonder if I was asking Lightroom to do things too quickly.

It hasn't happened since so I'm not worried. Now I've never checked that Lightroom generates it's own previews or simply uses the preview JPEG's in the RAW files So if you try and outpace Lightroom it doesn't have time to generate those previews on import or has time to read them

Now if you go to the Adobe Forums there are a couple of threads with this issue but no real answer. Now I'm running RC4.1 ( this handles 5D lll files). you could try opting for this, but I had the problem with this version. RC 4.2 is available but I can't see anything in the "fix" list that relates to this problem.

I've also not had the problem with my 1Dslll or Mk1 5D. But as I said I now let it load all the images then start sorting. It may be a resource thing but my iMac has quad cores and 8 GB of memory, so it shouldn't be that. You could report it on the Adobe Lightroom forums and see if anything comes from it.

I thought it was initially an isolated problem, but I'll keep an eye out for it in future

Thanks for the replies. I don't think it's a volume issue, as I was only trying to import 6 images. It's just strange that LR3 imported straight away. If anybody else has any ideas I'd be happy to hear.
Going to buy a card reader lunchtime and try that.

Thanks - Graeme.

OK guys - the card reader solution fixed it - thank you.

Still don't understand why LR3 would import straight from camera, but not LR4 - but appreciate the help anyway.

Thanks - Graeme.

What size previews are you generating? If 1:1 then it can take some time to import files, particularly on an older computer. If necessary, set the previews to minimal.
