no use buying old stuff when buying for the first time
cheers

The new Lightroom apparently doesn't work on XP - so if you plan to keep an XP machine you'll need to stick with Lightroom 3 for the moment...

I doubt you'll get it to work unless Adobe decide to relent and bring out a patch. If you're upgrading don't get Vista, jump straight to 7.

The annoying thing is in the corporate world software is sold with 'downgrade rights', which entitles to use an earlier version if needed. God knows why they can't do this in the retail world.

Keeping legacy support often greatly hampers code optimisation and performance and eventually you have to say enough is enough as its holding you back too much. Given the average 2-3 year life span of a computer system its perfectly acceptable to assume the vast majority of users are using or will shortly be using a modernish machine and a modern operating system and as a result you optimise for that rather than dragging everything down to or even writing a completely separate code tree for ancient stuff that isnt used very much and will soon be gone.

LR4 does have some nice improvements over LR3, and as allot new software now seems to be ditching XP support, I would consider going to W7...

thanks guys
i am a dedicated XP pro man and not a follower of fashion
took me ages to update from Win98 in 2003...so i drag my heels
i have used home vista and lost some hair with it with frustration and drank loads of tea waiting on the internet loading etc...got the laptop hard drive updated with XP pro
tell me i am a cobwebby old guy but at least i dont miss the pan...:D

will stick with LR3...dont know how to use it anyhow and the trial will run out in 26 days

you know the nice thing about LR3 trial...you get 30 days...but they only count the days you use it....:)

if necessary as time goes on i will upgrade to W7..my daughters laptop has it so it wont be a culture shock to change...yet my microsoft office is 97pro...and works ok
cheers

During the life cycle of LR4, Windows will have gone to Win 8 so XP will be three versions behind. Although there are financial reasons (and maybe philosophical ones too) why upgrading/updating from XP is not on the cards for someone, Adobe can hardly be blamed for designing their latest versions of software to run on up-to-date operating systems.

Anthony.
