LR 3 and an older computer

Yes
I have just read the LR 3 thread and it seems that LR 3 might struggle on an older machine.
I am running Windows XP on a Pentium 4 processor with 1gb of ram and a 200gb sata hard drive.
Is anyone using LR 3 on Windows XP, are there any problems with this, ie time it takes to load or carry out any instructions or crashes.

Mick.

I have a reasonably high spec 32 bit machine, it ran LR2 perfectly but crashes constantly with LR3. From what I have read on the web it seems LR3 does require more RAM but there are users with very high spec machines also experiencing issues, and on the other hand people with low ish spec machines running fine. I suspect 1gb of ram is going to be your problem - but be worth downloading the trial and give it a go.

Pentium 4's can struggle a bit with modern software, especially with only 1GB.

You could put a few more GB in there but it still won't run fast. For LR3 you would be better building a cheap intel dual core or Core duo 2 machine.

My PC struggled with LR2 so there was no way I was going to try LR3 it would have probably crippled the poor old thing.:D

Agree with the others re RAM and lack of, but if you do try it on your machine (and apologies if this is something you are aware of already!) just ensure there are minimal programmes
running in the background from start-up and try not to run any other programmes in addtion to LR3.

Even with this PC which I built a while ago specifically for Photoshop (4Gb), CS4 will eventually slow down when a 'simple' browser is running for instance - where I have multiple tabs open (Firefox),
plus lots of other stuff that automatically runs at start-up. Must have a purge one day!
A lot of programmes also have a habit of grabbing large chunks of memory and quite often not giving it back when closed..

It will run, I just tried on an old pc we have laying around, it's not going to be blisteringly fast though.

Firefox has longstanding issues with memory leaks, especially 3.6.x.

Thanks for all the replies, I thought it would be slow. I have just looked on my laptop and the system is Vista running Intel (R) core (TM) duo cpu T5750 @ 2 GHZ with 3 GB of RAM. I might have a play with the trial for a month and see how it goes.
Saying that I hate laptops for messing about with photos as the screen is never in the same position.

Thanks again,
Mick

TBH, that's the best way for you assess whether it will work for you.

If you can afford to upgrade your other PC to 2 or more GB to find out how well it works on the XP box, it won't do any harm to anything else you're using on that computer and could/should well improve it.
