Lower res increase light sensitivity?

Yes
I am new to all this so this may be a daft question. I have a D60 and was wondering if saving in a lower resolution would decrease noise in low light photos. I was thinking this as each pixel would get a larger part of the sensor. Or am I misunderstanding how its all working?

Thanks :)

No, it doesn't work like that. AFAIK, the size of the image is set by the camera after it's finished processing it, rather than varying how much of the sensor it's using.

The only way you can reduce noise after you've taken the shot is to use noise reduction in photoshop or some other software like noise ninja. Alternatively, shoot at a lower ISO.

Hope this helps.

I think that the lower resolution images just interpolate values from the complete sensor pixel set - 'throwing away' what they don't need.

Where there is a difference is with the likes of a D300 / D700 comparison. Both have a similar resolution of abou 12 megapixels, but the D700's larger sensor allows larger photo cells, which gives better high ISO performance.

it's to do with physical size, though with some cameras they throw away noisy pixels over non noisy ones so using a slightly lower res works as noise reduction. I doubt a d60 would as I believe it was introduced to canon on a 50d so would be more d300 type territory but confirm that with the nikon guys
