Hey,

Im just after moving over to Nikon from Canon and looking for a good low light lens, usually i would go straight for the 50mm 1.8, but in a lot of the places i shoot, the 50 can be a little telephoto, can anyone suggest a shorter low light lens that's also quite sharp? I'm still getting to know the Nikon lens range so forgive my naivety!

Cheers

Sigma 30mm f/1.4

i had this and i dont know why i just couldnt get to like it

the only other option is the nikon 35mm f2 which i do like

does seem as if nikon has a shortage in the prime lens range

If you got a lot of cash and prefer a zoom the 17-55 2.8 is excellent, big but excellent!

Ive already got this lens, i think its excellent also. I need something below f/ 2 for low lit concert venues that i ocasionally shoot at. How is the 35mm under poorly lit conditions? Does it tend to hunt quite a bit? That is one of my biggest issues with buying third party glass, they tend to perform quite poorly when there isn't much available light.

Cheers

28mm 1.4, depends how wide is too wide, you're probably better off with a top johnny zoom for concert gigs..

I already have the 17-55 and the 70-200 but occasionlly im not shooting in arena's and asked to shoot in grungy bars with crap lighting so i need a great low light lens. As i said previously, im just after moving to Nikon so im still learning the lens line-up, on the Canon side i had the 50mm 1.8 but found it too tele for most occasions, ill check out the 28mm though, cheers!

Well, there's not too many places to go, some scenes are just too damn dark.
To really get the best you can get, you need a low light body...:)

D3 and D700 are full frame, that 50 won't be quite so telephoto either..

If money is no object, then probably the ultimate combination for low light wide angle stuff is unarguably the D700/D3 and the 14-24 f/2.8.

It's the stuff dreams are made of... a lens so good that Canon owners are buying it and using it as a manual focus lens with an EF mount adapter...

Is the Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 fast enough for gigs...?

Thanks!

Out of curiosity, why did you move from Canon to Nikon? One area in which Canon's range gives you more options is exactly this: very fast lenses. Nikon don't offer you an 85mm f/1.2, a 50mm f/1.2, a 35mm f/1.4 or a 24mm f/1.4 .....
