Hi
I have a budget Nikon D3100, can any one recommend a low budget low light wideish lens that my intelligent 9 year old Granddaughter could use at an indoor family occasion

Nikon 35mm 1.8 dx would probably be good start, say £100-120 depending on where you get it or about £135 new as grey.

Is flash an option?

I would keep things simple for her so I would prefer no flash, would your recommendation work ok on auto ?

The lens will work with the camera. On auto, that depends what the camera decides. You might get away with it on the 3100 if one of the guide modes does low level no flash settings, probably worth checking that out.

If you want her to take photos on auto then you might be better to buy her a compact with an auto flash in auto mode. IF you’re going to give her a dslr then she needs at least to know more than auto or simply risk getting rubbish photos when the camera decides incorrectly and she doesnt know why.

35mm using p mode? You can then just set the flash too off.

Or A mode. Set to 1.8 and no flash with auto iso.

Thank you all for your help, I will get the 35mm lens for her and give her a bit of help. The beauty of having an 8 year old to take party pictures is people are more at ease with the photographer

Yep this one is easy. The 35mm that everyone else has recommended :)

I have the 35mm 1.8 and for mid light it's great at 1.8 I use the d3300 and get good results from it.
Aperture priority mode is great for daytime.
However when you are losing light, shutter priority is probably better at 1/100th and let the camera manage the ISO.
