hi there im looking for a descent lens that will be able to do a few job's for low light indoors, night clubs, high DOFand portait.

im cuming too you guys because i have been looking at the 50mm 1.4/1.8. im am more pushed towards the 1.4 with its larger apature but there are a few variations of this i understand? and i am confused on witch i should get.also if i would see a great difference between the two as there is quit a bit of difference in price.

I was also wondering if some of the other lens's like the 2.8's that i think go up to 17-70mm would be worth looking at because you can alter the focal length. might be usefull.

thanks for reading,im sorry about the grammer. ive got about £200 at jessops i want to use and ofcourse me own cash if needed.
cheers
sam

Sigma 30mm f1.4 is good. Give's you a 'normal' field of view on a cropped sensor. You might find the 50mm is too long for most situations (I do). I just got mine from Jessops with vouchers - knocked them down to £215.

My 50mm 1.4 lives on my D80.
There is a new AF-S version out but the D80 is compatible with either, I think the older one is getting tricky to get hold of now.

mm im gunna keep looking at these lens all week so hard to chooose. is 2.8 apeture alot different to a 1.4. i think it will be quit different. because i was thinking it would be good to get a lens a bit more choice of focal length. arhh so hard

cheers

Your shutter speed at f/2.8 will be four times as long as it would be at f/1.4. Is that different enough for you?

As StewartR says, it's a lot of difference... Each single stop change in aperture represents half/double the light hitting the sensor.

just looked is there a big difference between the 1.4G or the 1.4 AF-S. i noticed it was auto manual AF on th G is that the only dfference

(1) Your link doesn't work.
(2) What on earth is "auto manual AF"??
(3) The 1.4G and the 1.4 AF-S are the same lens. Nikon have very recently introduced a brand new version of the 50mm f/1.4. The old one is the AF 50mm f/1.4 D and the new one is the AF-S 50mm f/1.4 G. An explanation of what all the letters mean is here.
