Hey

I'm interested in taking some low key photos similar to the one on this link.

Obviously I need a single light source off to the side of the object I'm photographing.

I'd start off with it at a 45 degree angle and seee how it looks and move it closer to a 90 degree angle to get the desired effect.

But would you light it - continuous, flash or natural light in through a window?

Thanks in advance for the advice :)

Well I had a go and this is what I ended up with.

double diffusion (eg a screen of cloth or a diffuser) between the softbox and the vase might soften the edges of that highlight

good tones, blends nicely to black

Thanks, next time I'll use some tissue paper as a diffuser and see what happens - the image above is basically a halogen desk lamp with no diffusion at all.

a pillow case would do great then, better if it was 1 layer not 2 (gets more light through) so anything like that'd be grand

thats a better shot than I get with buckets of kit :D

Although extra light diffusion may help, possibly raising the softbox higher and getting it closer to illuminate the flowers as the main subject and letting the natural fall off of light onto the vase might also achieve a similair result.

Dont get me wrong though, great shot and nice work.

Low key is my favourite. You can use continuous lighting as well and experiment with shutter speeds
