Low Cost Wide?

I'm looking at getting a wide angle lens, have around £200, and need some help!

I'm going to be using it for landscapes, industrial plants (where i do alot of work), historic buildings and so on.

I'm in need of advice with regards to fixed and zoom, what would suit my needs?

Although a fish eye would be cool to own, im not in the market for one just yet.

What actually constitutes as a wide lens? Anything less than 35mm? I have the kit lens that came with the 400d, but the 18mm wont give me enough reach.

Im not stuck to 200, but i dont want to go silly as im also looking for a macro, also i dont mind 2nd hand gear.

Silly question maybe but could you not take multiple shots and stitch them together? at least until you can afford a decent wide angle, buying cheap generally just ends up with you being disappointed.
 
I'm happy to adjust my budget, thats what i have at the moment, but saving more isnt a problem.

I've seen the sigma on ebay, didnt know if it would be suitable for what i need.

Input appreciated.

I'm a little lost by this sentence. If you need more reach then you don't want a wide angle.

If you do want a wide angle, then the sigma 10-20 is definitely THE budget option. I have one, and whilst I shouldn't complain, chromatic aberation is a mare. Other than that, I love it.
 
mattyh, please see original post, 2nd para down. I'm typing this on a phone, takes a while.

68lbs, when i say reach, i meant more in the shot, my bad for using that phrase! Cant seem to get enough in the shot.

I doubt you'll get anything for £200, you should get a secondhand 10-20 for around £250-75. I can't say I was hugely impressed by the 10-20, but others seem to love it :shrug:
 
I think by 'reach' he means 'width'.

What about the Sigma 15-30mm - great lens and www.mifsuds.com has a used one for £199?

Also, have you thought of the Tamron or Tokinas? What about this? You might find a used one somewhere on ebay or put a WANTED request on this site.
 
Ok, so without going silly, what price should i be looking at paying for a half decent wide?

Looking back, reach probably wasnt the best term to use :) i knew what i meant though!

Sigma 10-20mm f/4-5.6 - £300
Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 - £470
Tokina 10-17mm AT-X f/3.5-4.5 - £450
Tamron 11-19 f/ 4-5.6 - £330
Tokina 12-24mm f/4 £350

Havings used the 10-22mm canon and the Sigma 10-20mm there's little between them. I'd say the Canon is marginally sharper aroudn the edges but you're paying £150 more for the priveledge. A lot of semi-pros seem to like the Siggy because the difference is minimal.

If it were me, I'd save up, get the Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 if you want a fast aperture wide zoom. I've yet to hear criticism of it, and with many folks saying it's the sharpest wide zoom around, I think this is the one I'll be hankering my missus to buy me from crimbo!! :) Mind you, for £350, the 12-24mm f/4 is a good buy too.

This is what I'm saving for, the Tokina 12-24mm, haven't seen a bad review yet.

Hi Mark, as said you may need to spend bigger to find a decent wide angle

something along the lines of the a Sigma 12-24, Sigma 10-20, Tokina 12-24 may do the trick but cost more than bdgetted

if you get stuck for what you after and want to test a couple of lenses for "reach" give me a shout, i use nikon stuff but use the 12-24, 24-60 70-200 and 100-300 to cover the range so you can test each lens to see what you want. take some test shots and decide whats best for you
 
Andysnap, Im starting to re-assess my thoughts now, especially as the Tokina 12-24mm with be a bit more versatile than the 11-16mm - and cheaper!! :)

Me too now. I was going to go all Canon. I've just recieved my 70-200mm F4L from kerso today. Next I want the 24-70 F2.8L as my main kit lens so this Tokina lens will complete the wide end. And it's a constant F4 too. And so much cheaper than a Canon 10-22mm.
